RON JARMS (Class of 1958)

Ron Jarms is being inducted into the Upper Iowa University Athletic Hall of Fame posthumously as an athlete. A transfer to Upper Iowa, he was a letter winner in 1957 and 1958. An outstanding 6'8'' basketball player, Jarms played on two Iowa Conference Championship teams for the Peacocks. The 1957 team earned a conference championship, while the 1958 team tied for the title. These teams were coached by Eb Eischeid.

He averaged 21.9 points per game during his senior season, which was second in District 15 (Iowa) of the NAIA. In his two-year career, Jarms scored 1,070 points for the Peacocks. He was named to the Iowa Intercollegiate All-Conference first team as a center in 1958 with teammate Wayne Sawyer, following an all-conference second team nod in 1957. "Had we had Ron for four years, we would have won many more games. He was the tallest player in the league," commented Sawyer.

Born in Monona, Iowa in 1936, he lived on a dairy farm and was an outstanding high school athlete at Postville. He graduated from Upper Iowa with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1958. Jarms was a double major in Physical Education and Science and Math. Ron worked as a manager in retail sales until 1972 when he and his family moved to Cheney, Washington. He purchased and operated, "Jarms Hardware", until he retired in 1995.

Mr. Jarms passed away on October 10, 2007 in Spokane, Washington at the age of 71. An avid fishermen and basketball fan, he loved his cabin time on Vancouver Island.

He is survived by his wife Tracy, his children Kimberly, Bill, Tom, Dan, his mother Vera Jarms-Wirkler and his sister Sandy.
