Charles "Chuck" Hughes

Charles "Chuck" Hughes" graduated from Upper Iowa University with a bachelor’s of arts degree in 1935. While at Upper Iowa, Hughes received four letters in baseball and was named team captain. He also earned letters in football three times, playing in every football game during his four years of college as the quarterback. He also earned two letters in basketball.

After graduation, he taught and coached at Tripoli, Iowa, winning berths into the state tournament in both baseball and wrestling. He also taught at Fayette, where his football team was undefeated in 1940 and won the conference championship. His Fayette basketball team won the county championship.

In 1941, he was drafted into the U.S. Army. After serving five years in the training area of the medical department, he was discharged with the rank of Captain.

After his career in the military, Hughes and his wife, Helen (Class of 1936), were in business in Elkader for 22 years. During that time, he was active in church and civic groups. In 1968, after continuing his education, he returned to teaching. He taught in the Muscatine school system until his retirement.
