Upper Iowa University Athletics Hall of Fame
James Day, class of 1967, was a four-year letter winner and starter at guard on the Upper Iowa football team. Also as a Peacock, he was a member of the 1964 IIAC football championship team, was named to the 1965 and ’66 IIAC first teams, was voted to the Midwest Sportswriters Little All-American Team, and in 1966 was also named NAIA first team and Little All-American.
Following graduation from Upper Iowa, Day enlisted in the Naval Aviator program and played football for the Pensacola Goshawks football team. He served 18 months in Vietnam, where he attained the rank of lieutenant, and was named Gold Wing Naval Aviator from 1969-71. He was awarded 13 air medals, including the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Purple Heart. Day is the executive vice president and co-owner of Northern Capital Insurance. He maintains an active relationship with his alma mater by serving on the board of trustees, and in 1994 he was the chairman of the Eb Eischeid Stadium Campaign, raising over $400,000 to date.
