Leonard Shillinglaw received his bachelor’s of arts degree from Upper Iowa University in 1932. While at Upper Iowa he lettered in football and basketball three times, and baseball all four years.

After graduation, he coached at Victor, Iowa, from 1932 to 1935 and was coach and principal at New Hampton from 1935 to 1956.

Shillinglaw was president of the Iowa Association of Secondary School Principals from 1953 to 1955. He was also high school principal and administrative assistant at Cherry Creek schools in Englewood, Colorado, and a state board member of Colorado from 1960 to 1966.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946. Because of his excellence as a coach and teacher, a building on the campus of Cherry Creek schools was dedicated in Shillinglaw’s name.

He, with his wife, Frances (Class of 1932), retired in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, before he died in 1984.

Shillinglaw was elected posthumously into the Iowa Officials Hall of Fame in 1985.
