He was the first Upper Iowan to make an All-Conference team. In basketball, he was named an All-I.I.A.C. guard and was second in scoring with 151 points. He was chosen for the All-Conference team as a forward in 1941, leading his team in scoring with 208 points; and in 1942 he was again picked for the All-Conference team, finishing second in scoring with 215 points. In 1940, Alderson set three league records including most points in a season, most field goals, and best game average.

Upon graduation he pitched for the Chicago Organization, playing for four years, missing out on the 1945 World Series because he served his county in the U.S. Navy as a Chief Petty Officer. He later coached and taught for 28 years in several Iowa schools.
