Upper Iowa University Athletics Hall of Fame
Caballero, a 1956 graduate of Upper Iowa and former Peacock football player, is being inducted posthumously into the Upper Iowa University Athletics Hall of Fame through special recognition. Cabby retired from Upper Iowa in 1995 after 40-plus years of service to the University; he passed away at his Fayette home this past June.
Over the years, Cabby served many roles at Upper Iowa. After graduating cum laude from UIU with a bachelor's degree in business administration in 1956, the Oelwein native started work as an admissions counselor at the University and later became director of admission. He also served as the Upper Iowa acting director of public relations and assistant registrar. In 1966, he was named as the University's first dean of students and in 1984 he became vice president of student services, a position he served until his retirement. After Cabby's retirement, then UIU President Ralph McKay asked him to work with the advancement and alumni office.
In 2003, Cabby received the UIU Alumni Award for Outstanding Service to the University and was listed as one of the Top 10 UIU alumni during the University's 150th anniversary celebration. He also served on the UIU Alumni Association Board. The "Cabby Award" is presented annually to a student active in residence life. Most recently, Cabby loaned his name to the UIU Dean of Student Development Fund to support programming by the Office of Student Development.
