Tate received a B.A degree from Upper Iowa in 1939. He went on to do additional graduate work at the University of Wisconsin.

In 1934 Tate participated on the All-State basketball of Elma High School. He went on to letter four years in football, basketball, track at UIU and also played baseball. Tate was the All-Conference end on the Iowa Conference football team in 1937 and 1938. Those same years he was captain of the basketball team and track team and was honored by the Des Moines Register as an Iowa College All-Conference selection. Tate was a leader on campus, involved in student government, the college paper, and president of H.U.I. fraternity, a secret letter organization. Fae was not the only Tate on campus during that time; he and his two brothers Floyd and Paul, played together on the same teams.

After graduation, Tate went into business working at Humboldt Concrete Products and the Emmetsburgh Coast-to-Coast store as manager. He was active in the community as county chairman of the Ammerican Cancer Society, mayor of Emmetsburg from 1966-1969, member of the local sports booster club, and a leader in the local SCORE group.

In 1968 Tate went back into coaching at the Mallard High School, until 1973 when a stroke ended his career prematurely.

Tate also served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II.
