Upper Iowa University Athletics Hall of Fame
Clarke Campbell is being inducted into the Upper Iowa University Athletics Hall of Fame as an athlete.
Campbell, a four-year letter winner for the Peacocks from 1961 to 1964, he was a four-year starter for Coach Eb Eischeid's football team.
Campbell, an excellent passer and runner during his four years with the Peacocks, won 26 games while losing 10 contests. During his senior year, 1964, the team shared the IIAC Championship with an 8-1 record. During his four years, Campbell threw 32 touchdowns and ran for 20 more while raking up 3,230 yards in the air and 3,643 yards of total offense. Campbell was named to the IIAC First Team back in 1964. Upon the completion of his career, he held the Upper Iowa record for total offense with 3,843 yards for a number of years. He currently sits 5th on the all-time list for career total offense and career touchdown passes (32). Campbell is 6th all-time in touchdown passes in a season (13) and 7th all-time in career passing yards (3,230).
Campbell had an outstanding teaching and military career. He grew up in Litchfield, Illinois and after graduating in 1957, he immediately out of high school joined the Marine Corp. After three years of active duty, he enrolled at Upper Iowa in 1960. After graduation in 1965, his thirty year career in education took him from Florida, Wyoming, Oklahoma, Illinois, Nebraska and his last teaching position in Iowa.
Campbell continued his military career as a member of the National Guard and U.S. Army Reserve. He retired from the military in 1992. Clarke and his wife, Glenda, a 1991 UIU graduate, currently live in rural Maynard. They operate the Big Red Barn Bed and Breakfast and maintain a dog kennel, where he breeds, boards and trains dogs.
