The Northern Sun Conference released their All-Conference teams for baseball on Wednesday and senior
Zac Cain was named among the league's best earning a place on the All-NSIC Second Team as an outfielder.
The honor marks the first time that Cain has earned a spot on the All-NSIC teams. Following the 2018 campaign, the Plymouth, Wis. product was named to the NSIC Gold Glove Team as a first baseman. In 2019, Cain opened the season in centerfield, played some games at third base and one at third base before heading back to the outfield in left.
Cain started all 35 NSIC games for the Peacocks in 2019 and led the team in batting average at .338 (16
th NSIC) thanks to a team-high 46 hits (9
th NSIC) in 136 at bats (6
th NSIC). He posted a slugging percentage of .478 fueled by a team-high 9 doubles, 2 triples and a pair of homers. Cain scored the most runs on the team with 28, while driving in 13 Peacocks. At his four positions this season, Cain posted a fielding percentage of .938 with 67 putouts and 9 assists, while making just 5 errors, 4 of which came at third.
Over the course of UIU's entire season, Cain hit .348 with 55 hits including 10 doubles, 2 triples and 2 homers for a slugging percentage of .475. His fielding percentage for the year was .949 with 84 putouts and 10 assists. Cain had 15 multi-hit games recording two and three hits in a game seven times apiece and tallying four base hits in UIU's first game of the season against Lewis.
During his four years with Upper Iowa, Cain has played in 153 games for the Peacocks as a first baseman, pitcher, outfielder and third baseman. He posted a career batting average of .338 with 166 hits including 29 doubles, 3 triples and 3 homers with 79 RBI and 89 runs scored.
The Peacock baseball team finished the season with a 12-28 overall record and a 9-26 mark in the Northern Sun Conference. In their five non-conference games, Upper Iowa split with Lewis University and Quincy University and defeated the University of Minnesota Duluth to register a 3-2 mark. In NSIC action, the Peacocks won a three-game series with the University of Sioux Falls 2-1 and split with the University of Mary, Concordia University, St. Paul and Wayne State College. UIU went 1-2 against Minnesota Duluth, Northern State University, Southwest Minnesota State University and the University of Minnesota Crookston. UIU went 5-9 in tight decisions posting a 3-6 record in one-run decisions and a 2-5 mark in games won by two runs.
AJ Friedrich (.357, 51 hits, 29 RBI), Cain,
Tony Salato (.338, 51 hits, 22 RBI) and
Riley Braughton (.316, 43 hits, 17 RBI) led the offense, while
Duncan Snider (3-5, 2.97 ERA, 57.2 IP, 68 Ks),
Blake Thiesse (2-3, 5.40 ERA, 50 IP, 23 Ks),
Clayton Lieb (1-2, 19.2 IP, 19 Ks) and
Alexander Morales (3-4, 43.2 IP, 35 Ks) led the pitching staff.
