INDIANAPOLIS - Peacock baseball (12-17, 5-7 GLVC) dropped the final game of the series on Sunday to UIndy (16-15, 10-6 GLVC) by a score of 6-2. The Greyhounds scored five runs in the third inning to maintain the advantage throughout the contest.
UIU struck first in the opening inning to score a run. Cael Luzum singled through the right side, and Gabe Bombardier hit a two-out RBI double down the left field line to bring in Luzum for the score.Â
UIndy used five hits to score five runs and take the lead in the bottom of the third inning. Gavin Duran hit a 2RBI triple, followed by a Chase Mason RBI single. Garrett Rusch added an RBI triple and was brought home on a Carter Thomas sacrifice fly for the 5-1 advantage.Â
The Peacocks loaded the bases in the fifth after a Brock Zimmer double, Gabe Bombardier walk and Jared Hoodjer reaching on an error. JJ Vargas grounded into a fielder's choice, bringing in Zimmer for the score. The Greyhounds added an insurance run in the sixth on a Bret Perry RBI double.Â
The final three innings didn't produce any runs for either side. UIU threatened in the eighth, loading the bases with one out after a Vargas walk, Hunter Jones reaching on an error and Kyle Hrncir hitting a bunt single. A strikeout and a flyout ended the inning with the runners stranded. UIU was only able to get one runner on in the ninth before the last three outs ended the game.
Zimmer led the team with two hits, including a double and he scored a run. Gabe Bombardier hit an RBI double, and Vargas recorded an RBI and a walk. The Peacock senior finished the series with a team-high six hits and four RBIs.Â
Jones tallied a double in the second inning while Thane Meiners, Luzum, and Hrncir each had a single. Hrncir, Zimmer and Meiners all ended the series with four hits.
Isaiah Maes started the game and pitched three innings while allowing seven hits, one walk and five earned runs. He tallied a game-high five strikeouts. Ethan Bombardier pitched 2.1 innings and allowed three hits, one walk and one earned run with two strikeouts. Austin Shingledecker had one strikeout in relief, and Brett Nicodemus had two strikeouts in two innings.Â
The Greyhounds were led by Perry and Duran, totaling two hits each. Duran had a double and a triple with two RBIs. Starter Ryan O'Born got his second win of the season on the mound. The redshirt sophomore right-hander pitched 5.0 innings, allowing six hits, three walks and two earned runs while adding four strikeouts.Â
UIndy outhit Upper Iowa 10-8, and the Greyhounds committed three errors. The Peacocks left 12 runners stranded compared to seven for the Greyhounds. UIU batters walked four times and struck out seven times, while UIndy batters walked three times and struck out 10 times.Â
The Peacocks return to Fayette for Easter weekend baseball against Lewis (Ill.) (11-17, 5-6 GLVC) on April 2-4. Action begins on Thursday at Robertson Woods Field at 2 p.m. against the Flyers.
