INDEPENDENCE, Iowa - UIU baseball (12-19, 5-9 GLVC) fell in both games to Lewis (Ill.) (14-17, 8-6 GLVC) in a doubleheader on a wet and rainy Friday at Kegler Field. The Flyers won, 13-2 and 6-2, after 14 innings of baseball and multiple hour-long lightning delays.Â
Due to the cold and rainy weather forecasted for tomorrow, both games of the doubleheader to wrap up the series have been canceled. The Peacocks will prepare to host William Jewell (Mo.) (6-24, 2-12 GLVC) next weekend, starting with a game on Friday, April 10, at 2 p.m.Â
JJ Vargas, Jared Hoodjer, Thane Meiners and Gabe Bombardier each had two hits for UIU on the day, with Vargas, Hoodjer and Meiners all adding a double. Hoodjer, Meiners and Hunter Jones each had an RBI. Brock Zimmer added a double.
On the mound, Tyler Glowacki led the team in strikeouts with five in game two. He struck out three straight batters looking in the sixth inning. Dylan Hesch pitched the first 4.1 innings of game two, allowing two runs on four hits with three strikeouts.Â
Game One: Lewis 13, Upper Iowa 2
After two scoreless innings, the Flyers scored a run on three singles in the third inning. Lewis kept the momentum going in the fourth, smacking four hits with a double to bring in three runs.Â
UIU responded in the bottom of the inning, starting with a Meiners leadoff double to left center. After a Gabe Bombardier single, Hoodjer and Jones hit RBI singles to bring in UIU's only two runs of the game.Â
The Flyers knocked in four more runs in the top of the fifth inning, highlighted by a Tylor Phommachanhom 2RBI single. After the Peacocks got the last out in the inning, the game was delayed for an hour and 35 minutes before the bottom of the fifth due to lightning.
Lewis' Jackson Bruno came out strong after the delay, throwing two strikeouts and retiring the side in the bottom of the fifth. The Flyers added a run in the sixth, four runs in the seventh and didn't allow another UIU hit to win the game in a 13-2 mercy rule.Â
Hoodjer led the team with two hits, a double and an RBI. Meiners had the only other extra-base hit with a double. Bombardier and Jones each had a hit. Not a single Peacock batter walked, as Vargas reached once on a hit-by-pitch.Â
Gabe Olson took his second loss of the season on the mound, dropping his record to 5-2. He allowed four earned runs on nine hits with a walk and a strikeout. Carson Dupuis and Garrett Bougie each recorded a strikeout in relief.Â
Each Lewis batter recorded a hit, with Phommachanhom leading the team with three hits and three RBIs. Bruno pitched a complete game to earn the win on the mound. He allowed two earned runs on five hits with six strikeouts.Â
The Flyers outhit the Peacocks 15-5, and neither team committed an error. Lewis batters were walked six times with two hit-by-pitches. The Flyers left eight runners on base compared to four for the Peacocks. Lewis stole seven bases on the wet base paths.Â
Game Two: Lewis 6, Upper Iowa 2
With both teams getting warmed up and ready to go, the game's start was delayed for over an hour. After the first pitch, game two featured two scoreless innings as well. Lewis' Jimmy Spellman got the scoring going with a two-out, two-run homer in the top of the third inning. That marked only the second hit of the game for the Flyers after Jackson Lunley reached on a hit-by-pitch.
UIU answered in the bottom of the third after a Vargas leadoff double and a Paul Safranski single got runners on first and third. Vargas later came home on a wild pitch, but two outs in the next two at-bats ended the inning with UIU trailing, 2-1.Â
Spellman walked and advanced on a wild pitch in the fifth inning. Alex Chaltin singled through the left side, bringing in Spellman for the RBI single and the 3-1 lead.Â
The Peacocks threatened heavily in the bottom of the sixth, starting with a Kyle Hrncir single and Zimmer double down the left field line. After a strikeout, Hoodjer walked to load the bases. Meiners hit a two-out RBI single through the right side to bring in Hrncir for the score. Lewis made a pitching change as Carter Endis entered and struck out Vargas to end the inning with the bases loaded.Â
Lewis added three insurance runs in the fifth after a Chris Daugherty double and a Chaltin 2RBI single. John Henry Russell added an RBI single up the middle for the 6-2 lead. Three groundouts in the bottom of the inning ended the game.Â
Vargas finished 2-for-3 with a double and scored a run. Meiners had the team's only RBI with a single. Hrncir, Zimmer, Bombardier and Safranski each recorded a hit with Zimmer knocking a double.Â
Hesch pitched 4.1 innings in the loss, dropping his record to 2-2. He allowed four hits, two earned runs and three walks with three strikeouts. Glowacki pitched 2.2 innings of relief, giving up four earned runs on four hits with three walks and five strikeouts.Â
Chaltin led Lewis with two hits and three RBIs, while Jayden Gonzalez also had two hits. Spellman hit the 2RBI home run, walked and scored twice. Vince Gohlke threw a team-high four strikeouts in the start, Ben Catrambone threw two strikeouts to earn the win and Endisch got a save.Â
Lewis outhit UIU 8-6, and the Peacocks committed the game's only error. Upper Iowa left five runners on base compared to seven for Lewis. The Flyers walked six times while UIU walked once.
