INDIANAPOLIS - Upper Iowa baseball (12-16, 5-6 GLVC) entered both games on Saturday with a lead in the final inning, but the Greyhounds (15-15, 9-6 GLVC) were able to get walkoff wins in both contests. UIndy took advantage of a pair of Peacock errors on the final play of both games to get the sweep, 4-3 and 5-4.
Gabe Bombardier had the top bat for the Peacocks, going 4-for-7 with a home run, a double and three RBIs. He also walked once and scored twice. JJ Vargas had two hits, two walks, a double and an RBI.Â
On the mound, Kyle Hrncir totaled a career-high 10 strikeouts in 5.1 innings in his game two start. That is the most strikeouts by a Peacock pitcher in an appearance this season and the most since 2023 when Keaton Parker had 14 vs. Wayne State (Neb.).Â
Brock Zimmer and Jayce Klug also totaled two hits on the day. Zimmer scored three times after also reaching on a hit-by-pitch. Ryne Woods, Hrncir, Jared Hoodjer and Thane Meiners all recorded a hit. Hoodjer, Hunter Jones and Trevor Kelling each had an RBI.Â
Dylan Hesch added six strikeouts in his 5.0-inning pitching appearance in game one. He allowed two earned runs on five hits and one walk. Landon Boisen tallied two strikeouts in his game one relief appearance.Â
The Peacocks and Greyhounds wrap up the series on Sunday at 12 p.m. ET/11 a.m. CT at Greyhound Park in Indianapolis.Â
Game One: UIndy 4, Upper Iowa 3
With the game tied at 2-2 entering the seventh inning, the Peacocks used a Zimmer single with Bombardier and Vargas walks to load the bases with one out. Jones hit a ball in the gap near second base, scoring Zimmer on a fielder's choice for the 3-2 lead.
UIndy's Luke Smock hit a leadoff double to start the bottom of the inning. Two six-pitch walks loaded the bases, but a flyout and strikeout added two outs. Chase Mason hit a grounder that Meiners had to run up for at shortstop. The ball sneaked under his glove, scoring two runs to win the game.Â
The Peacocks struck first in the third inning. After Zimmer reached on an error, Bombardier knocked a two-run shot on the first pitch of his at-bat for the early 2-0 advantage.Â
UIndy tied the game in the bottom of the third inning. After a Smock single and a Joey Humphrey double, Bret Perry hit a 2RBI single up the middle to tie the game. Hrncir struck out the next two batters to keep the game tied entering the fourth.
UIU loaded the bases with one out in the fourth, but UIndy pitcher Ayden Tran got out of the jam with back-to-back strikeouts. The Greyhounds two runners on base with one out in the bottom of the inning, but a Hesch strikeout and a fielder's choice kept the game tied at 2-2.Â
Bombardier finished the game 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs. He had the only extra-base hit for UIU. Zimmer recorded a hit and scored twice. Vargas went 1-for-2 with two walks.Â
Smock and Gavin Duran both had two hits for the Greyhounds. Drake Downing got the win for UIndy after pitching the last two innings, allowing one hit, three walks and one earned run with two strikeouts. Tran finished with six strikeouts in five innings pitched while allowing one earned run, six hits and two walks.
Hesch finished the game allowing five hits, one walk and two earned runs. He tallied six strikeouts. Landon Boisen picked up his first loss of the season in 1.2 innings of relief, tallying two strikeouts. The redshirt freshman allowed three hits, two walks and one earned run.
UIndy outhit UIU, 8-7. Both teams had an error. The Peacocks left 11 runners stranded while the Greyhounds left five. UIU reached five times on walks, while UIndy reached three times.Â
Game Two: UIndy 5, Upper Iowa 4
Tied 3-3 entering the seventh, Cael Luzum reached first on an error and stole second. Bombardier hit a two-out double to right center, scoring Luzum for the 4-3 lead.Â
Perry hit a leadoff single in the seventh, and Austin Bode got him to third base after an error. A wild pitch scored Perry to tie the game. After a sacrifice bunt, Mason hit a ball into right-center field, which dropped to score Bode and win the game.Â
UIndy got on the board first in the opening inning, scoring on a double steal attempt for the 1-0 advantage. Bode hit a home run in the fifth inning for the second run of the game.Â
The Peacocks responded in the sixth inning with three straight singles from Meiners, Zimmer and Bombardier to load the bases with no outs. Hoodjer hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Meiners for the first run.Â
Vargas doubled down the left field line on the next at-bat, which was originally called foul by the home plate umpire. After a review, it was ruled that the ball landed fair, bringing in Zimmer to tie the game at 2-2.Â
After a Woods walk, Kelling hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score the go-ahead run. Another review confirmed that Bombardier waited til the ball was caught before heading home. All three scoring plays by the Peacocks in the inning were reviewed.Â
Smock hit an RBI sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the sixth inning, tying the game at 3-3 entering the seventh inning.Â
Hrncir started the game and pitched 5.1 innings, allowing six hits, three walks, three runs and two earned runs. He tallied a career-high 10 strikeouts. Carson Dupuis took the loss in relief, allowing two runs, neither earned, and one hit.Â
Bombardier went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Vargas added a double and an RBI. Meiners, Zimmer, Hoodjer and Woods each had a hit.Â
Kaleb Marrs pitched a complete game for the Greyhounds. He allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits and two walks. Marrs added three strikeouts.
Bode finished 2-for-4 with a home run, a double and an RBI. Carter Thomas was 3-for-3 in the seven-hole.Â
Both teams totaled seven hits, but the Peacocks had three errors to UIndy's one. UIndy walked three times compared to two for UIU. The Peacocks left seven runners stranded while the Greyhounds left six.
