The Peacock baseball team salvaged a split on day two of their series with the Lopers of Nebraska-Kearney and avoided the non-conference sweep. The 11-5 win returned Upper Iowa to .500 (10-10, 2-0 NSIC) on the season and was due in large part to the effort of starting pitcher
Rory Kolo (pictured left). Kolo, who earned a save on Thursday against Northern State, threw a complete game to improve to 1-2 on the year. The righthander threw all nine innings allowing five runs on six hits while striking out 7 batters.
After a tough 11-9 loss in game one, UIU scored three runs in the first and added seven in the fifth inning to stake the starter to a 10-0 lead.
In game one,
Mikey Henrichs (pictured right) continued his torrid pace going 3-4 including a double
and a homerun while racking up five rbi and scoring twice.
Andrew Kraus,
Tyler Adams and
Ryan Citro all tallied two hits in the first contest.
Both teams abused the starting pitchers as the score was 8-7 in favor of UNK after just two innings. After UIU tied the game with a run in the top of the fourth, the Lopers reclaimed the lead 11-8 in the bottom of the inning. The Peacocks got one run back, but lost 11-9.
In game two, Citro, Kraus and
Sam Krick (pictured left) all reached safely with two hits. Krick registered four runs batted in with a grand slam in the fifth inning; the long ball marked his first collegiate homerun.
John Dobson also recorded a pair of rbi's.
Upper Iowa is scheduled to head to Mankato, Minn. this Wednesday, Apr. 10, for a double header against the Mavericks of Minnesota State and then is set to face the Beavers of Minot State on Saturday and Sunday, Apr. 13 and 14.
