The Peacock softball team is off to its best start in three seasons thanks to a sweep of the Lions of Lindenwood University on Friday afternoon. After spending last weekend in Missouri, Upper Iowa headed back down south on Thursday for a scheduled double-header with the Lions on Friday. In game one, the Peacocks earned two RBI-singles en route to a 2-1 victory. Then, the Peacocks followed that performance up with a big 11-0 win in just six innings as the game was shortened due to a run rule. The two wins give UIU an 11-5 overall record this season.
Game 1 Recap
Hailley Haning gave the Peacocks an early 1-0 lead in their first matchup with the Lions on Friday afternoon. Her RBI-single in the top of the first gave UIU the lead as
Katie Mnichowicz came around to score. The shot was Haning's eighth run batted in this year, which is good for second most on the team, only trailing
Jacqueline Flood's 10 RBI.
The Lions responded with a run in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at 1-1, but
Bailee Haberman gave the Peacocks' their lead back with another RBI-single. Haberman - a Torrence, California native also has 8 RBI this year after she plated
Tara Duran in the top of the fifth.
Those two runs were enough offensive ammunition to earn the victory as the Peacocks' pitching was close to perfect.
From the rubber,
Brooke Redmond was in complete control as she allowed only one hit and no earned runs in a full seven-inning outing. It was Redmond's sixth victory this season in nine appearances.
Game 2 Recap
The Peacocks picked up right where they left off after the thirty minute recess in between games. In the top of the first, Mnichowicz stole home after a defensive error, and her heads up play gave UIU the early 1-0 lead. It took two more innings before the Peacocks struck again, but this time, they struck gold in the top of the third.
With a runner on, Haning earned her team-high sixth double of the season and sent Haberman home for the 2-0 lead. Moments later, Haning reached home plate after another defensive error from the Lions.
Lauren Marlinghaus then got in on the party as she connected on an RBI-single, scoring Flood and rounding out the 3-run third inning.
The Peacocks added two more runs in the top of the fifth after two singles plated Haning and Flood again.
UIU ensured the early victory in the top of the sixth as Flood earned an RBI-single, Marlinghaus and
Rachael Anello both connected on RBI-doubles and freshman infielder
Casey Musgrave helped send Anello home. The four-run sixth inning gave the Peacocks the decisive 11-0 victory and ensured UIU of the day-one sweep.
UIU will stay overnight in St. Charles, Missouri as they prepare for a Saturday double-header with Truman State, held on the campus of Lindenwood University. Those games start at 1 p.m. Check back here for the recap of those contests.
