Reid and Ziebell power Peacocks to first conference win of the season

Reid’s complete-game performance and Ziebell’s clutch hitting lift Upper Iowa to 2-1 win after tough 6-0 loss in opener

Jefferson City, Mo. - UIU softball (6-36, 1-17 GLVC) splits a doubleheader with Lincoln (Mo.) (19-20, 5-15 GLVC) on Sunday. The Peacocks lost their first game, 6-0, but won their second game, 2-1. 

Sara Reid was on the mound for seven innings, striking out five batters in game two's win. She only gave up one run on seven hits. This marks her sixth win of the season and the 13th win of her career at UIU.

Dorothy Ziebell also played a vital role in the victory, posting two hits with a double, a run scored and an RBI. Addyson Alber recorded two hits with a double and an RBI. Mya Mendoza had two hits with a run. 

Upper Iowa returns home for its final homestand of the season on April 25-26. UIU hosts Missouri-St. Louis (21-19, 14-6 GLVC)on Saturday and Maryville (Mo.) (18-21, 8-11 GLVC) on Sunday. Both days will feature doubleheaders with games at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. 

Game One: Lincoln 6, Upper Iowa 0
The Blue Tigers boasted an early 3-0 lead in the first inning. Kierra O'Rourke drove home the first run after connecting for a single up the middle, and Tk Lawson drove home the other two runs after hitting a home run to left field. 

LU added another run in the second inning. The run was scored after Gracie Wright singled up the middle. 

UIU attempted a comeback in the third inning. Elliott Pomeroy hit a right field double and Kaitlin Foral walked, but the Peacocks were unable to capitalize on their momentum. 

The Blue Tigers took home the 6-0 victory after ripping off two runs in the sixth inning. The first run came off a Josie Bezzole left field single and the second run came off an Ann-Marie Simpson shortstop groundout. 

Pomeroy posted a double with a single, Alber posted a single. Foral finished with a walk. Ziebell pitched six innings, allowing five earned runs on 10 hits and a walk. 

Wright and O'Rourke each had two hits, an RBI and scored a run for LU. Mallorey Rogers threw seven innings, not giving up any runs on two hits. She also recorded six strikeouts.

Upper Iowa had two hits, a walk, an error and left four runners on base. Lincoln recorded 10 hits, six RBIs, a walk, an error and left five runners on base. 

Game Two: Upper Iowa 2, Lincoln 1
The Peacocks took a 1-0 advantage over the Blue Tigers in the second inning. Mendoza singled up the middle to start. She was later driven home on a Ziebell double to left field.

Lincoln tied Upper Iowa in the third inning with a run of its own. The run came off a Wright center field single. 

The Blue Tigers threatened in the bottom of the sixth when O'Rourke doubled to center field, and Wright raced from second toward home on the same play but was tagged out at the plate by the catcher, preserving the tie.

Upper Iowa secured the 2-1 win after scoring a run in the top of the seventh. Ziebell connected for a single to center field. Alber later brought her home on a sacrifice fly out to right field. 

Laughlin had two hits, while Ella Perkins had a hit. Mendoza mustered two hits and a run scored, while Alber mustered a hit with a double and an RBI. Ziebell recorded two hits with a double, a run scored and an RBI. 

Reid tossed seven innings, allowing one earned run on seven hits. The senior struck out five batters in her sixth win of the season. 

The Peacocks posted nine hits, two RBIs, an error and left eight runners on base. The Blue Tigers totaled seven hits, an RBI, an error and left five runners on base.
