Peacock softball struggles to find offensive rhythm as Saints claim 11-0 and 9-0 victories

Alber hits a double, Reid records six strikeouts during Sunday's doubleheader

FAYETTE, Iowa - Upper Iowa softball (6-40, 1-21 GLVC) was defeated twice by Maryville (Mo.) (22-22, 10-14 GLVC), with both games going to five innings on Sunday. UIU succumbed, 11-0, in the first contest and,9-0, in the second contest. 

Addyson Alber had two hits with a double. Jescie Comstock, Taylor Hamaker and Dani Laughlin each recorded a hit. Sara Reid pitched five innings in game two, striking out six batters. 

Reid recorded 12 innings against Mayville and Missouri-St Louis (30-15, 17-6 GLVC). The senior struck out six batters in each contest. Laughlin went 5-for-10 (.500) on the weekend, while adding a run scored and a walk on the weekend. 

Alber connected for a total of three hits with a double through all four games. The Cedar Rapids also scored a run.  

UIU concludes its season next week against No. 16 McKendree (Ill.) (36-12, 17-7 GLVC) and Illinois Springfield (28-18, 12-12 GLVC). The games against the Bearcats are at 12 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., on May 2, and the games against the Prairie Stars are at 12 pm and 2 pm on May 3. 

Game One: Maryville 11, Upper Iowa 0
The Saints scored their first four runs of the contest in the top of the first inning, taking a 4-0 lead. Laila Ruiz drove home the first two runs off a single up the middle. Kaitlyn Wagner grounded out to third shortstop to bring home MU's third run. Emily Erb reached base by a fielding error, allowing Addison Koth to score the fourth run.  

The Peacocks had a spark in the third inning, after Comstock singled to left field. Hamaker immediately followed her with a fielder's choice to third base, getting Comstock out by the third baseman. 

Laughlin then followed Hamaker with a walk. Elliott Pomeroy then recorded a fielder's choice to the pitcher that led to Hamaker being out a third. Alber reached base on a fielder's choice to second, which led to the second baseman tagging out Pomeroy.

MU added five runs to increase its advantage to 9-0 in the fourth inning. The runs were scored off a Madi Lenon 2RBI single, an Emma O'Flaherty double, an Erb fielder's choice and a Ruiz fielder's choice. 

The Saints sealed the 11-0 victory after adding two final runs in the fifth. Both runs came off a Wagner single to left field. 

Laughlin recorded a hit and a walk. Pomeroy, Alber, Comstock and Hamaker each connected for a single. Cara Farnam threw three innings on the mound, giving up eight earned runs on 10 hits and two walks. She also struck out a batter.

UIU totaled four hits, a walk, an error and left five runners on base. MU finished with 12 hits, 10 RBIs, four walks and left seven runners on base. 

Game Two: Maryville 9, Upper Iowa 0
Maryville ripped off four runs in the top of the first inning to command an early 4-0 lead. Wagner singled to center field for the first run. Marley Williamson doubled to right field for the second and third runs. Cailynn Gdowski singled to shortstop for the fourth run.

Alber attempted to spark some offense for Upper Iowa in the bottom of the first. She connected for a double to left center field. Later, Reid connected on a deep ball to left field in the third inning; however, MU's left fielder came down with the ball.  

The Saints tallied an additional two runs in the fourth inning. Koth drove home both runs off a 2RBI homerun to left center field. 

MU beat UIU, 9-0, after scoring three final runs in the fifth. All three runs came off a Ruiz single towards right field. 

Alber had the team's only hit, connecting for a double. She also had a team-high six putouts in the contest. Reid pitched seven innings, allowing nine earned runs on 13 hits and four strikeouts. The Central City native also totaled six strikeouts in her final home game as a Peacock. 

Upper Iowa recorded one hit and left one runner on base. Maryville mustered 13 hits, nine RBIs, four walks and left eight runners on base.
