Upper Iowa softball seeks strong finish in final homestand

Peacocks face Missouri-St. Louis on Saturday at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. and face Maryville on Sunday at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.

FAYETTE, Iowa - UIU softball (6-36, 1-17 GLVC) hosts its final homestand this weekend against Missouri-St. Louis (21-19, 14-6 GLVC) and Maryville (Mo.) (18-22, 8-12 GLVC). The Peacocks play the Tritons on Saturday at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m., and play the Saints on Sunday at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT
Upper Iowa went 1-3 in its last four contests. The team dropped a doubleheader to Missouri S&T (27-15, 14-6 GLVC) on April 18, and then split a doubleheader with Lincoln (Mo.) (19-20, 5-15 GLVC) on April 19. The 2-1 win over LU marked Upper Iowa's first conference win. 

Sara Reid tossed eight innings this weekend, giving up three earned runs on 10 hits and a walk. The senior had a 2.62 ERA, threw eight strikeouts and pitched a complete game in the victory over Lincoln. Addyson Alber hit the go-ahead sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh to aid the Peacocks in the win. 

In that win, Dorothy Ziebell recorded two hits with a double, a run scored and an RBI. Alber added two hits with a double and an RBI. Mya Mendoza mustered two hits and a run scored. 

STATISTICAL LEADERS
Dani Laughlin slashes a team-best .411/.472/.438. The redshirt sophomore also leads the team with 46 hits and 14 RBIs. She is ranked seventh in the conference in batting average. In conference games only, she is batting .512, which is the second-best of any player in the GLVC. 

Reagon Proud posts a team-high nine doubles and has scored a team-high 18 runs. Cara Farnam has hit the team's only triple and leads the team with two home runs. 

Jescie Comstock has walked a team most 17 times. She is also tied with Emma Tautges for a team-high three sacrifice hits. Elliott Pomeroy and Kaylee Marhefke both lead the team with two sacrifice flies. 

Reid has been UIU's top pitcher on the mound, throwing 120 innings, giving up 54 earned runs on 142 hits and 16 walks. The Riverside native also has a 3.15 ERA, which ranks 15th in the GLVC. She has struck out 73 batters, ranking 11th in the conference, and has pitched a shutout. 

As a team, the Peacocks slash .223/.299/.292 on the season. The team also has 232 hits, 49 doubles, a triple, seven home runs, 97 RBIs and 109 runs scored. 

AROUND THE GLVC
Taylor Nelson earned GLVC Player of the Week after going 11-for-12 (.916) at the plate with a .938 on-base percentage in a 4-0 weekend. The shortstop from Hailey, Idaho, also connected for four home runs and three doubles on a 2.167 slugging percentage. 

Jordan Foley won the GLVC Pitcher of the Week after guiding her team to two wins. The junior pitched 14 innings with two starts, allowing one earned run on five hits and two walks. She also threw a no-hitter and struck out 14 batters. 

Indianapolis (47-3, 21-1 GLVC) holds down the first spot in the GLVC with a 13-game win streak. McKendree (34-10, 15-5 GLVC) sits firmly in second, while Missouri S&T and Missouri-St. Louis sits tied for third. 

There are two GLVC teams ranked within the top 25 of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Poll. UIndy stayed at No. 4, while McKendree moved up three spots from No. 19 to No. 16. The Greyhounds received 349 points, and the Bearcats received 148 points in the poll. 

ABOUT THE TRITONS - Saturday at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. 
Missouri-St. Louis is 2-2 in its last four contests. The team succumbed twice to UIndy on April 18, before sweeping Lewis (Ill.) (21-19, 10-8 GLVC) on April 19. 

Kiley Sullivan slashes a team-best .402/.433/.621. She also leads the team in home runs with five and doubles with 12. May Pasqualini gets on base the most with a .500 on-base percentage, reaching 73 times. Jamie Widule has a team-most seven sacrifice hits, while Kaytie Kossina has a team-most two sacrifice flies. 

Ashley Borowitz boasts the most innings on the mound with 80.2. She's given up 35 earned runs on 88 hits and 17 walks. The Oshkosh, Wisconsin, native nets a 3.04 ERA, two shutouts and 47 strikeouts. 

As a team, UMSL is third in the conference in batting average at .315 and fourth in on-base percentage at .389. The Triton's 65 doubles rank fifth in the GLVC. 

Head Coach Chelsey Mulligan is in her third season at USML. She has an overall record of 68-72. 

ABOUT THE SAINTS- Sunday at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. 
Maryville has lost the last three of its four games. MU split a doubleheader with Illinois-Springfield (28-16, 12-10 GLVC) on April 18, before dropping a doubleheader to Indianapolis on April 19.

Jenna Kosnoff is slashing a team-best .393/.465/.770, while Addison Koff is slashing a second-best .330/.770/.402. Emily Erb has a team-high two triples. Payton Deakin has a team-most five stolen bases. 

Cora Boyle has thrown a team-high 88.1 innings, allowing 45 earned runs on 114 hits and 27 walks. She has a 3.57 ERA, a shutout and 39 strikeouts. 

Maryville is 11th in team batting average in the GLVC at .269 and ninth in ERA at 3.64. The Saints are tied for the third-most home runs in the conference with 41. They are also sixth in slugging percentage at .453.

Channin Billings is in her second season as head coach. She has an overall record of 46-48. 

UP NEXT
The Peacocks wrap up their regular season on the road next weekend. UIU faces McKendree on May 1 and Illinois-Springfield on May 2.
