FAYETTE, Iowa - Peacock softball (6-38, 1-19 GLVC) dropped a doubleheader to Missouri-St. Louis (23-21, 16-6 GLVC) on Saturday. UIU lost, 12-3, in six innings in game one and lost, 7-1, in game two.Â
Dani Laughlin led the way, hitting 4-for-6 (.667) at the plate and scoring a run. The redshirt sophomore added three putouts on defense. Sara Reid recorded a hit and struck out six batters on the mound. This marked her 10th game of the season with five or more strikeouts.Â
Reid, Mya Mendoza, Taylor Hamaker, Emma Tautges, Kaitlin Foral, Addyson Alber and Elliott Pomeroy were all recognized for Senior Day.Â
Upper Iowa hosts its final home games of the season against Maryville (Mo.) (20-22, 10-12 GLVC) on Sunday at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. The Peacocks wrap up their season next week with doubleheaders at No. 16 McKendree (Ill.) (34-12, 15-7 GLVC) and Illinois Springfield (28-16, 12-10 GLVC).Â
Game One: Missouri-St. Louis 12, Upper Iowa 3
UMSL controlled an early 1-0 advantage at the top of the first. The run came after Kay Kossina connected for a right field double.
UIU responded in the bottom of the second inning, scoring three of its own runs to take a 3-1 lead. Laughlin singled up the middle to start, before being followed by Pomeroy, who singled to shortstop. Alber later singled to shortstop herself, allowing Laughlin to score.Â
Cara Farnam followed Alber's single with a single up the middle, scoring Pomeroy. Ella Perkins drove home Alber for the final run of the inning after connecting for a sacrifice fly to left field.Â
The Tritons turned the tide in the second inning, tallying five runs, gaining a 6-3 advantage. The first four runs came off a Jamie Widule grand slam to left field, and the final run came off a Kiley Sullivan double to left field.Â
Missouri-St. Louis added three runs through the fourth and fifth innings. Sullivan drove home the first run in the fourth inning off a single down the right field line. Madi Pasqualini drove home the other two runs in the fifth inning off a single to right field.Â
UMSL secured the 12-3 victory after posting three final runs in the sixth. The first run came off a Phoebe Miller right-field double, the second run came off a Gracie Philpot single to the pitcher and the third run came off a fielding error by UIU.
Laughlin had two hits and a run scored. Alber finished with a hit, an RBI and a run scored. Pomeroy recorded a hit and run scored. Farnam tallied a hit and an RBI. Perkins posted an RBI and a walk.
Dorothy Ziebell pitched five innings, allowing nine earned runs on 13 hits and two walks. The sophomore also struck out three batters.
Upper Iowa totaled six hits, three RBIs, three walks, two errors and left six runners on base. Missouri-St. Louis had 14 hits, 13 RBIs, two walks, an error and left eight runners on base.Â
Game Two: Missouri-St. Louis 7, Upper Iowa 1Â
Pasqualini drove home UMSL's first run of the game in the first inning. She drove home the run after connecting for a left field single.Â
The Tritons took a 2-0 lead after adding a run in the fifth inning. The run came off a Kossina double down the left field line.Â
The Peacocks gained momentum in the fifth, scoring a run of their own. Hamaker singled to the pitcher off a bunt before stealing a base. Laughlin then singled to third before stealing a base as well.Â
Pomeroy later posted a sacrifice fly to right field, bringing home Hamaker. On that same play, Laughlin then stole third before getting tagged out by the catcher off a throw by left field.Â
Missouri-St. Louis squashed any chance of a comeback in the seventh, scoring five runs to beat Upper Iowa, 5-1. Kossina drove home the first two runs off a left field single. Sullivan drove home the third run after connecting for a left field sacrifice fly.
Miller hit a left field single to score the third run. Kenzie Stoltz hit a left field double for the fourth run, and Madison Rozanski hit a sacrifice fly to center field for the fifth run.Â
Hamaker tallied a hit and a run scored, while Pomeroy tallied an RBI. Alber and Foral each recorded a walk. Laughlin finished with two hits, while Reid finished with one.
Reid was also on the mound for seven innings, giving up seven earned runs on 14 hits. The senior added five strikeouts.Â
The Peacocks posted four hits, two walks, an RBI and left four runners on base. UMSL totaled 14 hits, seven RBIs and left seven runners on base.Â
