Peacocks Fall to Number Three Ranked Spartans, 5-2

Aguirre (pictured) nearly tied the game for Upper Iowa in the ninth.

Box Score Trailing 5-2 in the top of the ninth with two outs, Upper Iowa had runners on second and third. In stepped the final hope for the Peacocks. It was the junior and the number five hitter in the lineup, Jose Aguirre. The Tijuana, Mexico native powered the payoff pitch all the way to the track in right field for a very loud third out to end the game. Five more feet and UIU is tied with the number three team in the nation. Despite a valient effort, Upper Iowa fell to 6-3 on the season while Tampa improved to 17-3 in their 2013 campaign.

The Peacocks finished with more hits than their hosts (11-10) but couldn't get the timely hit. UIU stranded 12 baserunners on the night and were just 1 for 13 with runners in scoring position.

Neither team scored until the bottom of the third when the Spartans were the first on the scoreboard. UT's Drew Doty hit a two-run homer to right field that just cleared the fence for the first runs of the game.

In the bottom of the fourth, Tampa tacked on a third run thanks to an RBI double making it 3-0 in favor of the home team.

The visitors got their first runner across in the top half of the sixth. With one out in the inning, Andrew Kraus and Aguirre smacked back-to-back singles. A flyout off the bat of John Dobson put runners on the corners for Ryan Citro. During Citro's at-bat, the pitcher attempted to pickoff Aguirre who had took off early. The throw was errant and that allowed Kraus to come in from third.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Spartans pushed their lead to 5-1, the biggest it would get all game.

On the bump for Upper Iowa was junior transfer, Tanner Funke (0-2). The Huntley High School product turned in a decent outing on the mound. Funke tossed six innings and gave up five earned runs on nine hits while striking out five batters and walking only one. Sophomore Mitchell Luebbe then came on in relief and kept the Peacocks in the game.

In the bottom of the seventh, Luebbe gave up a one-out triple but retired the next two batters to keep UT's lead at four.

Neither team scored in the eighth inning as Luebbe tossed a second shutout inning but UIU tried their best to rally back in the top of the ninth frame.

Jimmy Pinakidis hit for Cody Heiman to lead it off and laced a double to right center field. That two-bagger was Pinakidis' second pinch hit in as many days. The freshman then advanced to third on yet another failed pickoff atempt by a Tampa pitcher. Leadoff hitter, Tyler Adams walked to put runners on first and third for Matt Corbitt. The Aussie came through with a double down the right field line pushing across Pinakidis and advancing Adams to third. Two outs later, Aguirre hit a frozen rope to right to end the game.

There were three Peacocks with two hits a piece including Adams, Kraus and Aguirre. Kraus and Pinakidis each scored a run while Corbitt tallied the only run batted in.

Upper Iowa is off Wednesday and faces Tiffin University in a doubleheader Thursday with game one beginning at 10 a.m.
