Upper Iowa's offense came alive in the middle innings taking advantage of walks and hit batsmen along with timely hitting to score six runs in both the fifth and sixth innings of their 17-7 victory over Oakland City on Wednesday. The win improves UIU's record to 2-5.
Dan Cwiertniak earned the win in relief for the Peacocks after two innings of work; he allowed one earned run while striking out two.
Upper Iowa trailed 4-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, but six runs later UIU locked in a three-run advantage, 7-4. OCU answered with one run in the top of the sixth, but the Peacocks added six more in their half of the inning and jumped up 13-5. UIU's offense added two runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth to run away with the win.
Four Peacocks came away with two hits in the game including
Rudy Casillas,
Patrick Arntson,
Matt Corbitt and
John Dobson. Arntson scored four times and drove in two, while Corbitt and Dobson each drove in four runs.
Mitch Luebbe also threw well on the mound picking up 2.2 innings and allowing just one run on three hits while strking out four batters.
Upper Iowa will play Oakland City and Cedarville Thursday afternoon in a pair of nine-inning contests.
