The saying goes, ‘big-time players come to play in big-time games.’ Senior forward and two-time NSIC third team selection
Elizabeth Kaluzinski did just that. She found the back of the net for the third time this year as UIU scored three unanswered goals in St. Paul, Minnesota, earning a 3-0 victory over Concordia in NSIC conference play.
The Peacocks improve to 11-2-1 in conference play this season and to a school-record 14-2-1 overall.
Kaluzinski, who has been quiet since scoring a goal in back-to-back matches six weeks ago, took her first shot of Friday's match just six seconds before the 40th minute. After hitting the post on her first attempt, she collected the deflection, shot and scored to give UIU a 1-0 lead before halftime.
The Peacock offense wasn’t done, though. Amanda Millard added a goal in the 76th minute after Madie Edwards’ shot was blocked by a defender. It was the sophomore midfielders' second goal of the season.
UIU added one final insurance goal to solidify the victory. It was Edwards again, but she didn’t find the back of the net, she found Kali Loescher in the 84th minute with a pass and assist. Loescher scored her sixth goal of the year and it gave the Peacocks a 3-0 lead.
With the best defense in the conference to back them, any lead for the Peacocks would have sealed the win. The victory snapped the Golden Bears' six-match home win streak.
The shutout was
Amanda Smith’s 13 of the season and seventh in a row. She also collected six saves.
Also with the shutout, UIU remains tied with Minnesota State for the best defense in the league. The Mavericks and Peacocks have allowed only six goals all year. The teams will meet on Sunday in Fayette, Iowa in UIU’s final regular-season match to see who really has the best defense in the NSIC.
MSUM defeated Winona State on Friday to stay undefeated in league play. The Mavericks also secured a school-record in wins this season with their 13th in a row. MSUM stands at 15-1-1 overall and 14-0 in the NSIC.
The Peacocks will try to knock off the number one team in the nation at home in the final regular-season match of the year. Kaluzinski,
Alyssa Petersburg,
Vicki Booth,
Catherine Bunting and
Valeria Ptasinski are all playing in their final regular-season game in the Peacock blue. Gametime is set for 1 p.m. at Pattison Field.
