ROLLA, Mo. - Upper Iowa women's soccer (0-1-2, 0-1 GLVC) took an early lead, but couldn't hold on Friday night to fall, 2-1, to Missouri S&T (2-1, 1-0 GLVC) in the conference opener. Freshman Maryn Hudson scored her third goal of the season in the loss.
With the goal, Hudson became the first Peacock to score three goals in each of the first three games since Emily Gielau in 2010. She ties Mikalyn Hidde in 2024 and Birgit Rijnders in 2016 for the most goals in a season by a true freshman since 2015.
Hudson's goal came in the 15th minute, unassisted. S&T responded seven minutes later with a goal by Aubrey Case to tie the game, 1-1. The contest remained tied at halftime.
The Miners took the lead five minutes into the second half. Lily Simpson scored a goal after a corner kick and assists by Case and Ella Kramer. The Peacocks were outshot 15-1 the rest of the way without allowing a third score.
S&T finished the game with a 22-7 shot advantage after holding a slight 6-5 shooting lead at the half. The Miners had five corner kicks to UIU's one. Upper Iowa committed 11 fouls, and Missouri S&T committed seven.
Sophomore goalkeeper Avery Harding finished the game with eight saves, her second-most this season. Hudson led UIU with three shots, two on goal. Freshman Kea Cabanilla-Ku added two shots with one on target. Aeryn Hatico and Haylie Hutchinson each had a shot. Taylor Marie Inocelda-Bihag, Rhea Buchanan and Abigayle Bates each played all 90 minutes on defense.
UIU is back on the road for its first Wednesday game of the season on Sept. 9. The Peacocks will take on Missouri-St. Louis at 2 p.m. at Don Dallas Soccer Field.
