THIS WEEK IN PEACOCK TENNIS… Upper Iowa women's tennis heads to Winona, Minn. for a pair of matches as they continue to navigate conference foes in their last go-around with the NSIC. The Peacocks go head-to-head with Southwest Minnesota State on Saturday, Mar. 5 at 5:30 p.m. and Minnesota State on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
PEACOCK HUE REVIEW… Women's tennis has competed in three duals so far this season, all of them being conference matches. They have a 0-3 mark on the season, as they look to pick up their first victory this weekend. Upper Iowa fell to Bemidji State 4-3 and Minnesota Crookston 6-1 last weekend. However, amidst their defeat, Varvara Queiroga Tavares was perfect over the weekend, winning both doubles and singles matches on Saturday and Sunday
At Bemidji, the Peacocks picked up a win in the doubles category. The No.1 combination of
Johanne Vallee and Rafaela Tavares defeated BSU's Nicoleta Anestiadi and Blanca Lopez-Oro in a tiebreaker match 7-6 (4). UIU's No. 2 doubles crew of
Elaina Wall and
Varvara Ogorodnikova won their match 6-3. Upper Iowa picked up two more wins on the day, starting with a victory in the No. 1 spot as Ogorodnikova defeated her opponent 6-2, 6-4. Vallee went on to trump her opponent 6-4, 6-3 to grab Upper Iowa's third and final victory of the day. Against Minnesota Crookston, Ogorodnikova grabbed UIU's only win over Madeleine Schneider in a 6-4, 7-5 decision as she handed Schneider her first loss of the season.
SCOUTING THE MAVERICKS AND MUSTANGS… Minnesota State is currently 4-1 overall and 1-1 in the NSIC. They defeated Sioux Falls 7-0 and dropped to Augustana 5-2. The Mavericks' doubles team composed of Lois Page and Avery Stilwell are 5-0 on the season and their doubles squad of Chiara Carnelutti and Freia Lawrence have a 4-1 mark on the year. Southwest Minnesota State is 1-10 on the season and 0-2 in conference. They fell to conference foes Augustana 7-0 and Sioux Falls 4-3. They will be in search of their first conference victory this weekend as they take on Upper Iowa and Winona State.
UP NEXT… The Peacocks are back in Minnesota next week against two different NSIC competitors. They face Minnesota Duluth on Saturday, Mar. 25 and St. Cloud State on Sunday, Mar. 26.
