THIS WEEKEND IN PEACOCK TENNIS... The Upper Iowa University women's tennis team matches up against a pair of
NSIC foes in Winona, Minn. as they face St. Cloud State University and the University of Minnesota Duluth. The Peacocks take on the Huskies on Saturday, Mar. 19, at 1 p.m., before a matchup against the Bulldogs on Sunday, Mar. 20, at 1:45 p.m.
LAST TIME IN PEACOCK TENNIS... Upper Iowa split a pair of
NSIC duals in Mankato, Minn. in their most recent contests on Feb. 26 and 27. The Peacocks opened the weekend with a 4-3 win against Southwest Minnesota State University in a tightly contested dual on Feb. 26 before falling 4-1 in an abbreviated matchup with Minnesota State University, Mankato on Feb. 27. The results pushed UIU to a 6-5 record and a 3-3 record in
NSIC duals, locking the Peacocks in a four-way tie for the fifth-best conference mark.
FRESHMAN PHENOM... Charalampia Grammatikaki has locked down the No. 1 singles spot for the Peacocks. This season, the freshman is 10-1 in No. 1 matches, including a 7-0 mark in 2022. Grammatikaki's flawless record in the top singles spot makes her the NSIC's only undefeated No. 1 player (min. 5 decisions), and she is a perfect 6-0 in No. 1 singles matches in the
NSIC. The Athens, Greece native has compiled a 7-4 doubles record, and her 5-2 overall mark with partner
Jessa Michieli is tied for the eighth-best winning percentage in the
NSIC.
SUPERB SOPHOMORE... This season, Varvara Ogorodnikova has compiled an 8-2 singles record, including a 7-1 mark in the No. 3 singles spot. The sophomore's 5-1 record at No. 3 in 2022 is tied for the second-best winning percentage in the
NSIC. Ogorodnikova has gone 3-0 against
NSIC foes at No. 3 and 1-1 against
NSIC foes at No. 2. The Samara, Russia native has also tallied an 8-3 doubles record, tying
Lina Ziani for Upper Iowa's best mark.
Ogorodnikova and
Ziani have partnered to go 7-3 in doubles, including 6-2 at No. 2 and 1-1 at No. 1. In 2022, the Peacock pair's 4-1 record at No. 2 is the NSIC's third-best winning percentage, and their 5-2 overall mark is tied for the eighth-best winning percentage in the
NSIC.
HOUNDING THE HUSKIES... St. Cloud State holds a 5-6 record and is 3-3 in
NSIC contests this season. The Huskies last played from Mar. 6-9 in four non-conference duals in Florida, going 1-3 over the quartet of competitions. SCSU's individuals have combined for a 36-30 record in singles play and a 12-21 doubles mark.
Johana Brower and Claudia Munoz Perez lead the Huskies with a 7-3 singles mark. Brower is 6-2 at No. 3, while Munoz Perez is 6-2 at No. 5. Munoz Perez's 5-5 overall record leads St. Cloud State in doubles. The Huskies hold a narrow 8-7 edge in the all-time series against the Peacocks. UIU had won five of seven contests, including duals in 2019 and 2020, but
SCSU claimed a 6-1 win in the last meeting on Apr. 9, 2021. The Huskies are scheduled to play Winona State University before playing the Peacocks.
BESTING THE BULLDOGS... Minnesota Duluth has gone 2-6 (2-4
NSIC) to start the season. The Bulldogs last played on Feb. 26 in a non-conference dual against Gustavus
Adolphus College, losing 6-1. UMD's individuals have combined for a 14-34 record in singles play and a 9-15 doubles mark. Olivia
Honsey leads the Bulldogs with a 5-3 singles record, going 3-0 at No. 5 singles and 2-3 in the No. 6 singles spot.
Honsey (3-2) and Amanda
Hanowski (4-3) have compiled UMD's best doubles records. The Peacocks hold an 8-4 advantage in the all-time series against the Bulldogs, but Minnesota Duluth has won the last four meetings. UMD handed UIU a 7-0 defeat in the last matchup on Apr. 10, 2021. The Bulldogs are scheduled to play Winona State University before playing the Peacocks.
LOOKING AHEAD... The Peacocks return to Winona, Minn. on Saturday, Mar. 26, for an
NSIC dual against Winona State University. The Peacocks and Warriors are scheduled to match up at 1:30 p.m. Upper Iowa will then play an intrastate matchup against NCAA
DIII opponent Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Mar. 28.
