THIS WEEK IN PEACOCK TENNIS... The Upper Iowa University women's tennis team heads to Bemidji, Minn. for a pair of NSIC Duals against Bemidji State University and the University of Minnesota Crookston. The Peacocks battle the Beavers on Saturday, Feb. 19, at 3:30 p.m., before entertaining the Golden Eagles on Sunday, Feb. 20, at 9 a.m.
LAST WEEKEND IN PEACOCK TENNIS... Upper Iowa claimed a 5-2 win over the College of Saint Benedict in Winona, Minn. The Peacocks earned the doubles point and won at Nos. 1, 2, 3, and 5 singles to best the NCAA DIII Bennies. UIU improved to a 4-3 record with the win and is 1-1 in NSIC duals.
LEADING LADY...Charalampia Grammatikaki improved to 6-1 at the No. 1 singles spot this season with a 6-1, 6-2 win against Saint Benedict. The freshman has been one of the NSIC's top performers thus far and will have a chance to make a statement against Bemidji State's No. 1 Sophie Groen, who was the NSIC's first Player of the Week honoree in the conference's first release on Feb. 8.
GOING FOR TWO... In No. 2 doubles, the Peacock pairing of Varvara Ogorodnikova and Lina Ziani improved to 4-2 with a 6-2 win against CSB. The No. 2 doubles duo is 9-2 in their last 11 matches dating back to last season.Â
HIGH FIVE... Newcomer Padmasree Murugan won a tightly contested three-set battle 6-4, 2-6, 11-9 in the No. 5 singles match to close the day against St. Benedict. The win marked her second straight No. 5 singles victory after winning 7-6 (8-6), 2-6, 1-0 (10-8) against the University of Mary in the previous dual.
BESTING THE BEAVERS... This season, Bemidji State holds a 3-3 record and is 1-3 in NSIC contests. The Beavers fell 4-3 against Southwest Minnesota State University and 5-2 against Minnesota State University, Mankato in a pair of duals last weekend. BSU's individuals have combined for a 14-16 record in singles play and a 10-5 doubles mark. Sophie Groen leads the Beavers with a 4-1 record at the top singles spot, while Shaelyn Johnson has gone 5-0 at No. 2 singles. Groen and Johnson have combined to go 4-1 as the Beavers' top doubles team, while Nicoleta Anestiadi and Laney Rutkowski have gone 4-1 at No. 2 doubles. Bemidji State earned a 5-2 win over Upper Iowa last season, but Ogorodnikova won 7-5, 6-4 at No. 1 singles over Groen while Michieli won 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (10-8) over Johnson in the No. 2 singles match. UIU holds an 11-4 advantage in the all-time series against BSU, but Bemidji State has won the last four duals. The Beavers are scheduled to play Winona State University before playing the Peacocks.
GETTING AFTER THE GOLDEN EAGLES... Minnesota Crookston is still looking for their first win after a 0-4 (0-4 NSIC) start this season. In a pair of duals last weekend, the Golden Eagles fell 6-1 against Southwest Minnesota State and 7-0 against Minnesota State. UMC's individuals have combined for a 4-20 record in singles play and a 2-10 doubles mark. Madeleine Schneider is 3-1 in the top singles spot after opening the season with three consecutive wins at No. 1 singles for Minnesota Crookston. The No. 3 doubles duo of Kaydance Hinn and Michelle Swyter leads UMC with a 2-2 doubles record. Upper Iowa secured a 7-0 win over Minnesota Crookston last season as UIU won each doubles match 6-0 and won each singles match in straight sets. UIU is looking to boost its 12-0 record in the all-time series against UMC with a 13th-straight win. The Golden Eagles are scheduled to play Winona State and Bemidji State before playing the Peacocks.
LOOKING AHEAD... The Peacocks are set for a road trip to Mankato, Minn., for a pair of NSIC Duals on Feb. 26 and 27. UIU see Southwest Minnesota State University at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 26, before a matchup against Minnesota State University, Mankato at 8 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 27.
