Box Score The Upper Iowa University women's tennis team was unable to withstand the Warriors of Winona State University as they fell by a score of 7-0. The Peacocks saw strong performances from
Varvara Ogorodnikova and
Jessa Michieli in No. 1 and 2 singles, respectively, but ultimately dropped the NSIC Dual in Winona, Minn. Winona State improves to 5-3 (5-2 NSIC) on the season while UIU falls to a 1-6 (1-4 NSIC) record on the year.
Recap... The dual opened with doubles competition as the Peacocks were unable to secure a win and earn the doubles point.
Varvara Ogorodnikova and
Lina Ziani fought hard in a 6-3 defeat in No. 2 doubles play, but Winona won all three doubles matches and too the early 1-0 lead in the NSIC Dual.
The Peacock deficit grew to 3-0 after the Warriors picked up 6-1, 6-0 wins in both No. 5 and 6 doubles in reverse order. The Warriors continued to work their way up through the singles matchups as they clinched the win in the dual with a 6-1, 6-3 victory in No. 4 singles. The finishes continued to come in reverse order with Winona winning No. 5 singles 6-3, 6-3 before picking up wins in No. 1 and 2 singles, respectively, to take the 7-0 victory in the dual. Ogorodnikova had a strong showing in No. 1 singles competition as she battled in a 7-5, 6-2 defeat.
Jessa Michieli put together the most impressive Peacock performance on the day as she won her first set by a score of 7-6 in No. 2 singles to pick up the lone set-victory for UIU. Michieli fell 6-3 in her second set before being barely edged out in a 1-0 (10-7) defeat in the third set.
Quotables... "In doubles, Winona played really aggressive and was able to apply a lot of pressure during the points. We lost a couple close games at deuce and made too many unforced errors. In singles, we picked up our aggressiveness and had some competitive matches. Unfortunately, we made too many double faults and were not able to win some close games. Jessa (Michieli), at No. 2 singles, played a great match against a strong player, but unfortunately lost in three sets. Lina (Ziani), Alejandra (Abella) and Varvara (Ogorodnikova) also had some closer matches. Mya (Herrmann) and Elaina (Wall) played good players and showed a great fighting spirit. Overall, we showed more consistency and aggressiveness than in the prior matches, but today Winona was stronger than us. We keep improving week after week but need to continue working hard at practice and continue learning how to trust ourselves during our matches."
