This Week in Peacock Tennis… The Upper Iowa University women's tennis team is set to battle the Warriors of Winona State University in Winona, Minn. in an NSIC Dual at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Mar. 20. The Peacocks will then head to Waverly, Iowa to face the NCAA Division III Wartburg College Knights at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Mar. 22. UIU holds a 1-5 (1-3 NSIC) record on the season, and is coming off a two-week layoff following a weekend in which they fell to the NCAA Division I University of Northern Iowa and Division II Purdue University-Northwest.
Taking a Look Back… Upper Iowa dropped both of their matches the last time they played, but the Peacocks battled hard against the Panthers and Pride over the weekend. UNI secured a 7-0 victory over UIU, but
Varvara Ogorodnikova and
Jessa Michieli played highly competitive matches in No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively. Ogorodnikova lost a closely contested first set by a score of 6-4 before dropping the No. 1 singles match 6-4, 6-1, and Michieli was locked in a hard-fought first set in her No. 2 singles match that went to a tiebreak before she fell 7-6 (7-3) in that tight set, and ultimately fell 7-6, 6-0. The Peacocks picked up a point against the Pride in their last dual, but UIU fell by a score of 6-1. Ogorodnikova continued her impressive and competitive play in singles competition as she claimed a hard-fought victory in No. 1 singles against Purdue University-Northwest. After dropping the opening set by a score of 7-6 (8-6 tiebreak), Ogorodnikova tied the match with a 6-3 win in set number two before dominating in the tiebreaker set with a 10-1 victory to claim the match and a point for UIU in the dual.
Scouting the Competition… The Warriors of Winona State University hold a 4-3 (4-2 NSIC) record on the season, and the team is coming off a loss in their last dual following three straight victories. The Warriors are led by Rachel Kelly and Rina Niehoff who hold 6-1 records in No. 2 and No. 3 singles competition, respectively. Kelly and Niehoff have also combined for a 3-0 record in No. 1 doubles and a 3-1 record in No. 2 doubles matchups as they have won five straight to give the duo a 6-1 record on the year. The WSU doubles pairing of Faith Young and Sara Anderson is 5-0 in No. 3 doubles competition thus far. The Wartburg College Knights boast an 11-3 overall record coming into the weekend, but are just 2-2 in their last four duals. The Knights are led by Olivia Phillips as she has compiled a 9-4 record in singles play by going 2-1 in No. 1 singles and 7-3 in No. 2 singles. Sydney Rottinghaus is another major contributor for Wartburg as she holds a 7-2 overall record in singles competition while going 1-0 in No. 2 singles and 6-2 in No. 3 singles. The duo of Phillips and Rottinghaus has combined for a 7-3 doubles record, going 4-3 in No. 1 doubles action and 3-0 in No. 2 singles play.
Up Next… The Peacocks are scheduled to play a pair of NSIC Duals in Winona, Minn. on Mar. 27 and 28. Saturday's action against the Southwest Minnesota State University Mustangs is set for a 12:20 p.m. start, while Sunday's contest against Minnesota State University-Mankato is scheduled for 9:30 a.m.
