Box Score 2 Upper Iowa's women's tennis team split their final two matches of the season in Winona, Minn. on Saturday and Sunday. The Peacocks scored a 6-1 win over the University of Minnesota Crookston on Saturday, but followed it up with a 5-2 loss to Bemidji State University. UIU is now 3-9 overall and 2-9 in the Northern Sun.
In Upper Iowa's 6-1 win over the Golden Eagles on Saturday, the Peacocks won the doubles point thanks to the teamwork of
Shakhnaza Zhanatova and
Maryke Badenhorst at No. 1 (6-0) and
Lavanya Singh and
Lara Peco at No. 2 (6-2). In singles competition, UIU won all five matches competed, but did hand one forfeit due to injury to the Golden Eagles to claim the 6-1 victory.Â
Zhanatova (6-0, 6-0) dominated the No. 1 singles match, while Badenhorst came up one game shy of the sweep (6-1, 6-0). Peco won her match at No. 3 singles by a 6-1, 6-0 score, and Singh scored a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles.
Chelsea Scott posted a victory at No. 5 singles (6-2, 6-2) as she outlasted her opponent. The Peacocks only allowed the Golden Eagles to score nine game wins in the seven matches.
Against Bemidji State, UIU's top doubles combo of Zhanatova and Badenhorst made it a perfect weekend with a 6-3 win at No. 1, but the Beavers claimed the doubles point with a 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles and a win by forfeit at No. 3 due to injuries.
Zhanatova posted a perfect 4-0 weekend with a win (6-2, 6-1) at No. 1 singles, while Badenhorst dropped a 7-6 (8-6), 6-1 decision at No. 2 singles for her only loss of the weekend. Peco lost 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3 singles, while Scott was defeated 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 singles. The Peacocks got their second and final point from Singh at No. 4 singles. Singh scored the win thanks to scores of 6-2 and 7-6 (7-5).
Upper Iowa's season comes to a close with these decisions. The Peacocks will not be competing against Northwest Missouri State University due to injuries.
