Box Score 1 The Peacock softball team earned a split on the final day of the PFX Spring Games in Clermont, Fla. on Wednesday morning. Upper Iowa dropped their opener against the Yellow Jackets of Cedarville University, 7-6, before bouncing back with an upset of the No. 6 Bobcats of West Virginia Wesleyan College. With the split, UIU continues to get off to its best start as a member of NCAA Division II, with a 12-4 record.
Upper Iowa will return to the diamond next weekend, March 16-18, at the HyVee Softball Classic in St. Joseph, Mo. hosted by Missouri Western State University. The Peacocks will take on the Bearcats of Northwest Missouri State University to open the tournament on Friday, March 16 at 12 p.m.
Game 1: Cedarville 7 - Upper Iowa 6
UIU trailed early on in game one Wednesday, falling behind 4-0 through the first three innings. The Peacocks responded in the fourth inning with their first run of the game, when
Erin Drahozal reached on a fielder's choice, and
Ali Green scored on a muffed throw. After
Jaclyn Thompson pitched a scoreless fourth frame, the UIU offense awoke in the fifth.
The Peacocks scored five in the inning to take the lead, 6-4. A wild pitch got the rally started, and catcher
Shannon Nix followed it up with a bases-clearing triple to give UIU a 5-4 lead.
Amanda Williams singled home Nix to command the lead, but Cedarville was not done themselves.
The Yellow Jackets scored three runs in the home half of the sixth inning to reclaim the lead, 7-6. UIU could not find a comeback in them this time, and the Yellow Jackets held on for the one-run victory. Thompson suffered the loss, tossing 5.1 innings.
Game 2: Upper Iowa 5 - #6 West Virginia Wesleyan 3
The Peacocks pulled off the upset over the No. 6 Bobcats in game two, 5-3. West Virginia Wesleyan dropped out of the rankings Wednesday afternoon, but prior to the game ending, UIU had beaten a top-10 team in the country.Â
