Game 1: Upper Iowa 7 - Notre Dame (Ohio) 6 (10 Inn.)
In what might be the game of the tournament, the Peacocks earned a come-from-behind win in the opener Tuesday against the Falcons. Upper Iowa led 1-0 after three innings with a
Jenny Budds solo home run. That seemed to be enough to back up starting pitcher
Jaclyn Thompson, who went 7 straight innings of one-run softball. However, with the game tied at one in extra innings, the Falcon offense awoke.
In the top of the eighth, three run-scoring singles forced Thompson out of the game, and a fielder's choice scored the fourth run of the frame to give Notre Dame a commanding 5-1 lead. Heading to the bottom of the eighth, the game seemed to be all over but the final score. However, the Peacocks had other plans.
In extra innings, the International Tiebreaker (ITB) takes place, where the last out from the previous inning is placed on second base to start the frame.
Sami Kay Shafranski was placed on second for UIU, and
Julia Buffington stepped up and opened the inning with an rbi-double.
Katie Crogan then stepped up and smashed a two-run shot to center field to bring the Peacocks within one, 5-4, with still no outs recorded. After a pitching change,
Ali Green kept it going with a single, and
Jordyn Brennan stepped up and completed a sacrifice bunt.
Shannon Nix then delivered with a single, but Green stopped at third, placing runners on the corners with one away.
Erin Drahozal then drew a walk to load the bases, and with
Amanda Williams batting, a wild pitch scored another run to tie the game. UIU answered with four in the eighth inning to tie the game at 5, and the teams headed to the ninth in the most improbable way.
Emily Kisch came in to pitch in the ninth, and delivered with a one-two-three frame, and was in line for the win if Upper Iowa could walk off. However, the Peacocks could not do it in the ninth. In the 10th, Notre Dame took the lead again, 6-5, when a single and a throwing error propelled the lead for the Falcons. Upper Iowa had to answer the bell again on offense, and, again, they did not give in.
With Buffington placed on second, a wild pitch moved her to third base. A walk to Crogan put runners on the corners, and Green stepped up with a chance. The sophomore delivered with an rbi-single to left field to tie the game. With runners at first and second, Brennan then stepped up in a sacrifice situation. The bunt was put down, and a throwing error by the Falcon catcher scored the game-winning run. UIU earned a dramatic win to keep their winning streak alive. Kisch picked up the win for the Peacocks.
Game 2: Upper Iowa 8 - Holy Family 2
Kisch got the Peacocks off to a good start, with three strong innings to start game two. Her offense backed her up right from the beginning, with a run in the first, and a run in the second. Nix's solo shot in the second gave UIU the 2-0 lead, and the lead grew in the later innings. Leading 3-1 in the top of the sixth, the offense kept it going.
Drahozal started with two outs with a single, and an rbi-double from Williams extended the lead. Another run-scoring double from Budds helped a three-run inning, and the Peacocks led 6-1 heading to the seventh. UIU added two more in the final inning, and the pitching of Kisch, Drahozal, and
Sydney Wilcox helped seal the deal. Kisch earned the win, picking up two victories in one day's work.
