The Peacock women's tennis team returned to the courts on Saturday after a three-week break from competition. Upper Iowa lost an 8-1 decision to Winona State University in a Northern Sun Conference Dual. The loss dropped UIU's record to 1-8 overall and 1-6 in the conference, while WSU improved to 10-1 on the season and 7-0 in the NSIC.
The Warriors controlled the doubles matches winning 8-1 at No. 1 and 8-0 at No. 2 doubles before claiming the No. 3 match by forfeit. Â Winona State took their 3-0 lead into the singles matches where they won five of the six matches.
Shakhnaza Zhanatova earned a win for the Peacocks at No. 1 singles in straight sets 6-1, 7-5. The win pushed the sophomore's singles record to 7-1 at No. 1 this season and kept her undefeated against Northern Sun opponents at 7-0.
Anna Okolot nearly got a second point for the Peacocks at No. 2 singles, but lost a 6-1, 6-7, 1-0 (10-8) bout to Rachel Gantz. Winona State controlled the matches at No. 3, 4 and 5 before gaining the final point on a forfeit by UIU at No. 6.
Upper Iowa will travel to Sioux Falls, S.D. for their next two matches this coming Saturday and Sunday, Mar. 24-25. UIU will take on Augustana University on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. and then challenge the University of Sioux Falls on Sunday at 9 a.m.
