The Upper Iowa tennis team lost their just their second Northern Sun Conference dual of the season on Sunday morning in Winona, Minn. The Vikings of Augustana controlled the dual winning 9-0 to improve to 11-5 overall and 9-0 in the conference. The Peacocks are now 7-4 overall and 7-2 in the NSIC.
Isabella Sella and Jemina
Linn Sorman battled at No. 1 doubles, but dropped an 8-5 decision to Kornel Staniszewska and Berkley Darr.
Shakhnaza Zhanatova and
Kelly Jachymowski were defeated 8-2 at No. 2 doubles, while
Anna Okolot and
Breanna Heichert lost 8-4 at No. 3 doubles.
Zhanatova and Okolot had the best matches in singles play at No. 2 and No. 5, respectively. At No. 2, Zhanatova lost 6-4, 7-6 (7-1) as she nearly forced a third set tiebreaker. In the No. 5 bout, Okolot lost 6-4, 6-3. In the remaining four singles matches, the Vikings won 43 of the 46 games at the No. 1, 3, 4 and 6 matches.
Upper Iowa will head to Moorhead, Minn. next weekend to close out their regular season with two final NSIC matches. The Peacocks will take on the Marauders of the University of Mary on Saturday, Apr. 8 and the Dragons of Minnesota State University Moorhead on Sunday, Apr. 9.
UIU is currently in second place heading into the final weekend of the regular season. The top eight teams in the conference standings will earn the right to play for the NSIC Tournament Championship in Minnetonka, Minn. on Friday and Saturday, Apr. 21-22.
