Upper Iowa improved to 3-0 on the season thanks to a 7-2 win over Minnesota State University, Mankato in Winona, Minn. on Saturday afternoon. The Peacocks claimed all three doubles matches and secured the dual victory with four wins in singles action. After the loss, MSU fell to 1-4 overall and 1-3 in the conference.
Isabella Sella and
Linn Sorman scored an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles over Erin Streeter and Melissa Mashburn, while
Kelly Jachymowski and
Shakhnaza Zhanatova picked up an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles over Kelly Lechowski and Kelly Spielman.
Anna Okolot and
Breanna Heichert teamed up at No. 3 doubles for an 8-6 win over Abby Schmidt and Monika Ryan.
In singles play, Sella claimed a win at No. 1 with a 6-4 victory in set one and led 3-0 when her Maverick opponent defaulted out. Zhanatova scored an impressive 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 2 and Sorman outlasted her opponent at No. 3 singles by scores of 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-4). The final win for UIU came at No. 5 when Okolot picked up a 6-1, 6-0 victory.Â
Minnesota State's two wins came at No. 4 singles when Killian Doran defeated Jachymowski in three sets 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (10-1) and at No. 6 as Abby Schmidt defeated Heichert 6-0,6-2.
The Peacocks will remain in Winona, Minn. for a dual against the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State University on Sunday at 9 a.m.
