THIS WEEK IN PEACOCK WOMEN'S SOCCER... Upper Iowa (1-7-1, 1-5-1 NSIC) will play a pair of Northern Sun Conference games this weekend, and they begin on the road in Marshall, Minn. on Friday afternoon. The Peacocks match up with the Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs at 3p.m., and then come back to Fayette for a Sunday date with the Sioux Falls Cougars. Sunday's game gets underway at 1 p.m., and can be seen on UIU TV online and in eastern Iowa on KCRG TV 9.2. Both games this weekend can be streamed on the Stretch Internet app on Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, and Android TV.
HUSKIES AND BULLDOGS TOP PEACOCKS... UIU is coming off a tough weekend at home in Northern Sun Conference play. The Peacocks were outshot 14-6 in the 3-0 loss to St. Cloud State on Friday afternoon, however, did bounce back to play one of their better games against Minnesota Duluth on Sunday. The effort, however, was not enough as UIU dropped a tough, 2-1 overtime game for their fourth straight loss. Sunday's loss was just the second time this season UIU scored in a defeat.
THE SERIES... Upper Iowa is 8-3-2 all-time against the Mustangs, and will look for their second consecutive win over SMSU. The Peacocks picked up a 2-0 win over Southwest Minnesota State at home last season in a middle of a five-game winning streak. UIU holds a perfect 5-0 all-time advantage against the Cougars, outscoring USF 22-2 in the five games. UIU's 2-1 road win last season propelled them to their fifth straight victory.
TALLYING UP THE SAVES... Senior goalkeeper
Caila Petrie's save total is really adding up in 2017. Petrie has tallied 56 saves this season, which ranks fourth in the NSIC and 47th nationally. Her 6.2 saves per game also ranks fourth in the league, and ranks 46th in the country. Petrie added nine more saves last weekend in two games, and for the entire season has racked up over 825 minutes in net.
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS...
vs. SOUTHWEST MINNESOTA STATE... The Mustangs (0-9, 0-7 NSIC) have split time in net between sophomore goalkeeper Jessica Craigmile (0-5-0) and true freshman Jenna Meyer
(0-4-0). Meyer had a season high 11 saves in Sunday's loss at Minot State. The 2017 SMSU roster features four total seniors in Emily Huddleston, Amanda Hartmann, Fabiana Peiro, and McKenna Peters. Peiro leads the Mustangs with six shots on goal, while Huddleston leads the team with 19 total shots. Hatmann is second on the team with 15 shot attempts on the year as well.
vs. SIOUX FALLS... The Cougars (3-5-2, 2-3-2 NSIC) went 0-1-1 on the weekend with a 4-0 loss to Minot State and a 1-1 tie with the University of Mary. The Cougars jumped out to a 1-0 lead over UMary when Lauren LaFavre connected on her fourth goal of the season, scoring off a long pass. Despite a severe edge in shots (27-7 overall, 12-6 in shots on goal) favoring UMary, the Marauders never truly threatened USF goalkeeper Morgan Perkins, who finished with 11 saves. However, a corner kick in the final minutes of the game was the only chance UM needed, as they connected to tie the game at 1-1 with less than three minutes to play. Both teams fired two shots in the 20 minutes of overtime, but neither were able to break the tie.
