Upper Iowa claimed at least a share of second place in the Northern Sun with a 5-4 victory over Minnesota State University Moorhead in Winona, Minn. The victory improved the Peacocks' record to 10-8 overall and 9-1 in the NSIC, while the Dragons fall to 8-7 overall and 7-4 in the conference.
The Peacocks grabbed the doubles matches at #1 and #2 thanks to wins by the pairings of
Saki Kawabata/
Isabella Sella, who posted an 8-3 victory, and
Kelly Jachymowski/
Anna Okolot, who won 8-4. The Dragons claimed the #3 doubles match 9-7 over
Yulia Prokopyshyn and Jemina Lynn Sorman.
Upper Iowa claimed singles wins at #1 and #3 behind the play of Kawabata (6-2, 6-1) and Jachymowski (6-0, 6-1), but Sella lost a three-set match (6-3, 1-6, 1-0 (10-8)) at #2. The Dragons kept up the pressure with wins at #4 over Sorman (6-1, 6-4) and at #6 over Prokopyshyn (6-3, 6-3) to tie the dual at 4-4 with one match to finish.
The #5 singles match went down to the wire as Okolot squared off against Ashley Wood of the Dragons. Okolot won the first set 7-6 and Wood grabbed the second set by the same score to send the match into a third set tiebreaker. Okolot won the tiebreaker 10-5 to claim a 1-0 third set win and deliver UIU their tenth win of the season and ninth NSIC victory.
Upper Iowa will be back on the hardcourts tomorrow morning in Winona, Minn. to close out their regular season against the Marauders of the University of Mary at 9 a.m.
