Tennis to Close NSIC Schedule with U-Mary and MSU Moorhead

Upper Iowa will take on the Marauders of U-Mary and the Dragons of MSU Moorhead on Saturday and Sunday, Apr. 9-10, in Winona, Minn. The Peacocks will look to lock up a second place finish in the NSIC with a pair of wins.

The Peacock women's tennis team (9-8, 8-1 NSIC) suffered their first loss in the Northern Sun last Sunday against Augustana University, but the team will look to bounce back this weekend as they close out their regular season schedule.  Upper Iowa will host a pair of NSIC duals against the Marauders of the University of Mary on Saturday at 9 a.m. and the Dragons of Minnesota State University Moorhead on Sunday at 12:30 p.m.

Two wins would guarantee the Peacocks a second place finish in the conference, match last year's conference record of 10-1 and hand UIU the second seed heading into the NSIC Championships on Apr. 23-24 in Minnetonka, Minn. at Lifetime Fitness Oakdale.

Upper Iowa closed out the 2015 campaign at MSU Moorhead on the final weekend of their conference schedule.  The Peacocks defeated U-Mary 8-1 and MSU Moorhead 6-3 to clinch second place in the conference.

This season, the Peacocks are led by a trio of players that have 9 singles wins including Kelly Jachymowsi, Saki Kawabata and Isabella Sella.  Anna Okolot is right behind with 8 wins, while Jemina Lynn Sorman has 7 and Yulia Prokopyshyn has notched 6 victories.  In doubles action, Kawabata and her partners (Jachymowski and Sella) have won 11 matches, while Jachymowski has 10 wins and Sella and Okolot have claimed 9 wins each with their teammates. Prokopyshyn has 8 wins in doubles matches and Sorman has come out on the winning side 7 times.

The Marauders enter the weekend with a 5-9 mark overall and a 3-6 record in the NSIC, while the Dragons are 7-6 overall and 6-3 against the conference.  U-Mary is currently one spot out of the top eight that will qualify for the 2016 NSIC Women's Tennis Championship, while MSU Moorhead has clinched a spot in the championships with their six NSIC wins.  MSUM is in fifth place in the current standings.
