Peacock Tennis Returns to NSIC Play in Winona

Upper Iowa will take on Winona State in a conference matchup on Saturday. The Peacocks look to remain perfect in the NSIC with a win.

The Peacock women's tennis team is headed back to Winona, Minn. for the second time this spring.  Upper Iowa was in Winona two weeks ago when they closed out February with a pair of Northern Sun Conference wins over the University of Minnesota Duluth and St. Cloud State University.  UIU will take on Winona State University on Saturday, Mar. 19, at 2 p.m.

Upper Iowa returns to Northern Sun Conference play this weekend after a four-match swing in Oklahoma.  The Peacocks dropped all four of the matches, but gained experience with a new alignment against quality foes.  Upper Iowa has a perfect 6-0 mark in their NSIC matches to this point with wins over the University of Minnesota Crookston (9-0), Bemidji State Universit (6-3), Minnesota State University, Mankato (7-2), Southwest Minnesota State University (9-0), Minnesota Duluth (9-0) and St. Cloud State (7-2).

Last season, the Peacocks earned an 8-1 decision in Winona to improve to 7-0 in the conference thanks to a sweep of the three doubles matches and wins in five of the six singles matches.  Since tennis was brought back to the Upper Iowa campus in Fayette, the Peacocks are 4-8 against the Warriors over their first nine NCAA Division II seasons.  UIU has won two of their last three matchups against the WSU.

In singles action, the Peacocks are led by a quartet of players that have 7 wins this season including Kelly Jachymowsi, Saki Kawabata, Anna Okolot and Isabella Sella.  In doubles action, Kawabata and her partner have won 9 matches, while Jachymowski, Sella and Okolot have claimed 8 wins each with their teammates.

Winona State is 2-6 this season overall and 2-4 in their NSIC matches.  WSU's wins have come over Southwest Minnesota State and Minnesota Crookston.  The Warriors are led by Justine Daane (5-3 singles, 5-3 doubles) and Rachel Gantz (6-2 singles, 5-3 doubles).
