The Peacock women's tennis team is off to Winona, Minn. this weekend looking to stay perfect in conference play with a pair of NSIC matches. Upper Iowa opens the weekend with a match on Saturday, Feb. 27 against Minnesota Duluth at 12:30 p.m., followed by a match on Sunday, Feb. 28, against St. Cloud State at 9 a.m.
UIU earned its second straight sweep last weekend by defeating the Mavericks of Minnesota State 7-2 and the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State 9-0.
Against the Mavericks, UIU earned two victories in three competitive doubles matches, with the No. 1 and No. 3 duos from UIU picking up 8-4 victories. In singles competition, Upper Iowa took five of the six matches and the lone loss came in a tie breaker at No. 3.Â
Kelly Jachymowski won at No. 4 singles in a tie breaker, winning the extra game 10-4. Reigning NSIC Player of the Week
Saki Kawabata won her match at No. 1 and surrendered just two games in the victory, 6-2, 6-0.
In the matchup with the Mustangs, Upper Iowa lost only four games in their three doubles matches which included an 8-0 decision by
Anna Okolot and
Yulia Prokopyshyn at #3.
Isabella Sella and Jemina Lynn Sorman earned an 8-1 victory at #2 and
Saki Kawabata teamed up with
Kelly Jachymowski at #1 to post an 8-3 win.The Peacocks controlled five of the six singles matches dropping only 13 games at #1, #2, #3, #5 and #6. Sella claimed the biggest win at #2 thanks to a 6-0, 6-0 victory. Jachymowski rallied at #4 singles after dropping the first set, 6-3; she picked up the win thanks to a 6-2 win in set two and a 10-3 win in the tiebreaker.
In the last five years, the Peacocks are a perfect 5-0 against UMD, including an 8-1 victory over the Bulldogs last year. Over that same span, UIU is 2-3 against SCSU, but defeated the Huskies 9-0 last year in St. Cloud, Minn.
