The Peacock tennis team made it through their opening weekend of Northern Sun Conference action with a 2-0 record thanks to their 6-3 victory over Bemidji State University on Saturday in Grand Forks, N.D. Upper Iowa won two of the three doubles matches and picked up victories in four of the six singles bouts.
The Peacocks claimed wins at number one and three doubles.
Saki Kawabata and
Kelly Jachymowski pulled off an 8-3 win, while
Yulia Prokopyshyn and Anno Okolot paired up for an 8-4 win. Bemidji States win came at number two when Morgan Opp and Zoe Lindgren defeated
Isabella Sella and Jemina Lynn Sormann 8-4.
Kawabata, Sella and Okolot claimed straight set wins at number one, two and five singles, while Jachymowski dropped the first set to her opponent at number four, but bounced back to win set two and the tiebreaker. Bemidji State earned a pair of wins at number three when Opp defeated Sorman (6-4, 6-0) and at number six where Justine Scheller outlasted Prokopyshyn (7-6 (7-3), 6-4) in a tightly contested match.
The Peacocks will continue their run in the Northern Sun Conference next weekend with a pair of matches against Minnesota State University, Mankato and Southwest Minnesota State University. Upper Iowa will take on the Mavericks on Saturday at 9 a.m. and the Mustangs on Sunday at 4 p.m. Both contests will take place at the Huether Family Match Pointe Tennis Center in Sioux Falls, S.D.
