Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 The Peacock softball team ended their season with a pair of losses in the NSIC/US Bank Softball Tournament on Thursday. UIU got a pair of great pitching performances from
Jacqueline Flood and
Brooke Redmond, but fell to Minnesota State, 3-1, and St. Cloud State, 2-1.
Â
Upper Iowa finished the season 23-30 overall and 18-12 in the Northern Sun, earning a six seed in the conference tournament despite being picked 10th in the NSIC Preseason Poll. UIU had two players selected to All-NSIC teams, as Flood was named to the First Team and senior
Shelby Crist was given the NSIC Gold Glove at catcher.
Â
Minnesota State 3, Upper Iowa 1Upper Iowa got to Maverick pitcher Coley Ries when the two teams met in Fayette on April 8, scoring 10 runs on 10 hits off the Northern Sun's Preseason Pitcher of the Year. But in today's NSIC/US Bank Tournament match up, the Peacocks couldn't get the bats going against the sophomore right-hander.
Â
Flood (13-13) did her part on the day, holding MSU to three runs, two earned, on six hits. Flood also scored the only Peacock run of the day, hitting a home run in the top of the sixth.
Â
Minnesota State tallied a run in the second, third and fourth innings. A pair of leadoff singles would end up coming around to score the first two Maverick runs, then a solo home run capped the scoring for MSU.
Â
St. Cloud State 2, Upper Iowa 1The Peacocks got on the board in the bottom of the first in their elimination game of the NSIC/US Bank Tournament with
Whitney Williams coming home on a wild pitch. She singled to start off the inning, then moved to third on a Flood single before coming home to score, giving UIU the early 1-0 lead.
Â
After a leadoff walk for the Huskies, Redmond (6-12) kept the Huskies at bay, pitching one of her best games of the season. Redmond sent down 15 straight SCSU hitters following that walk through the fifth inning.
Â
St. Cloud State finally got a baserunner when Redmond hit Megan Lehnen with a pitch to start the top of the sixth. Lehnen moved to third on a sacrifice and ground out, then scored on a Peacock error to tie the game at 1-1.
Â
Redmond, still holding on to her no-hitter despite allowing a run, finally gave up a hit to lead off the top of the seventh. After another sacrifice to move the runner over, the Huskies picked up their second hit of the day, scoring the runner from second and taking the lead, 2-1.
Â
Upper Iowa couldn't get any momentum going in the bottom of the seventh, going three-up, three-down to end the game.
