The Peacock tennis team improved to 11-5 overall and 9-1 in conference play with an 8-1 win over the University of Mary in Moorhead, Minn. on Saturday, April 11. Upper Iowa took all three doubles matches, then proceeded to nearly take all six singles matches, dropping only #6 singles in a tie-breaker.
Iris Verweij and
Saki Kawabata moved to 9-1 in conference play at #1 and #2 singles, respectively, as well as going to combining to move to 9-1 at #1 doubles their wins against the Marauders.
Yamit Vodavoz and
Anna Okolot cruised to victories, dropping just four games each.
Victoria Kulbokas took her first set with ease, 6-0, then endured a battle in the second set, winning 7-5.
The best match of the day came at #6 singles, where
Kelly Jachymowski battled U-Mary's Courtney Brackin. The pair went to a tie breaker in the first set, with Brackin taking winning the extra game 7-4. Jachymowski took the second set 6-3, forcing another third set tie-breaker. In the end, it was a hard fought battle by both competitors and Brackin was two points better in the final stanza.Â
Upper Iowa will take on the Dragons of Minnesota State Moorhead in Moorhead, Minn., tomorrow for their final conference dual of the season. The Peacocks have one more non-conference dual scheduled against Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on April 18, before heading to the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Championships in Lake Minnetonka, Minn. on April 24-25.
