THIS WEEKEND IN MEN'S BASKETBALL Â
The Peacocks will open the season with a trio of tough games at the Conference Commissioner's Association (CCA) Tip-Off Classic in Anaheim and Carson, California. Upper Iowa starts the season against Alaska Anchorage on Friday night at 10:30 p.m. at the Arena at the Anaheim Convention Center. UIU then faces off with the #15 Western Washington Vikings on Saturday at 1:15 p.m. in Anaheim, before moving to Carson, California for the final game of the weekend against #11 California Baptist on Sunday evening at 10:30 p.m.
KEY NOTES TO CONSIDERÂ
1 Â Â A CENTURY IN THE MAKING:Â Upper Iowa enters its 100th year of men's basketball with the start of the 2015-16 season and third year under the tutelage of
Brooks McKowen. The Fairbank, Iowa native was named the 18th head coach in Peacock men's basketball history prior to the 2013-14 season and holds a 33-27 record at UIU. Â
2 Â Â FAMILIAR FACES:Â The Peacocks return 8 of the 10 players who played in 80% of the games in 2014-15 season. This includes three seniors in
Jordan Hay,
Jarrod Gamble and
Jernell Hughes, four juniors in
Jimmy Roth,
Josh Weeber,
Luke Lenhart, and
Jace Hanna, and one sophomore in
Carson Parker.Â
Â
3 Â Â INCOMING FRESHMAN:Â UIU brought in three freshman for the 2015-16 season. Ethan Steinbronn, from Westgate, Iowa, had one the most decorated high school basketball careers in Iowa history and is the only player in state history with 1500 points, 1000 rebounds and 400 assists. Elliot Kane, of Champlin, Minnesota, earned all-conference honors as a junior and senior and helped his team to the state tournament in 2013-14. Logan Weyer hails from Wilson, Wisconsin, and left Baldwin-Woodville High School with more than 1,300 points and a 4.42 assist-to-turnover ratio, as well as the all-time school leader in steals.4 Â Â NSIC PRESEASON COACHES POLL:Â The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference released the 2015-16 Preseason Men's Basketball Coaches' Poll on Oct. 22 and the Peacocks have been picked to finish 7th in the 16-team league. It is the highest that the Upper Iowa has been picked since joining the conference prior to the 2006-07 season. The Peacocks were selected 10th last season, but finished seventh overall and fourth in the South Division.
THE SERIES... This will be the first time Upper Iowa has faced any of the three opponents on the dockett for the weekend.
Â
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS...Â
ALASKA ANCHORAGE: The Seawolves will sport a new-look club in 2015-16, with seven transfers and two returning redshirts joining four veterans from last year's club ... among the returners, Sr. G Brian McGill (13.8 ppg, 5.3 apg, .498 FG) is a two-time All-GNAC honoree (2nd team in 2013-14; hon. men. in 2014-15), while 5th-year Sr. F Christian Leckband (7.0 ppg, 3.6 rpg, .384 3FG) are the only players with more than a year of experience in Green & Gold ... among the newcomers, Idaho transfer Sekou 'Suki' Wiggs should make a major impact, along with former JC standouts Spencer Svejar, Diante Mitchell, Corey Hammell and Tayler Thompson.
WESTERN WASHINGTON:  The Western Washington Vikings Men's Basketball program has been selected No. 15 in the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division II Preseason rankings. The Vikings, selected by coaches to win the GNAC championship, finished the 2014-15 season 20-11 overall and advanced to the GNAC Tournament championship game, where they lost to Seattle Pacific. Western returns four of its five starters from last season, including GNAC Preseason All-Conference selections Jeffrey Parker (F, Jr., Richmond, CA/Salesian) and Ricardo Maxwell (Sr., G, Cincinnati, OH/Withrow/Edmonds CC).
CALIFORNIA BAPTIST:  California Baptist was selected to win the PacWest Conference, earning 13 of 14 first place votes. The Lancers were also picked as the preseason favorite last season, finishing in third place and receiving an at-large bid to the NCAA West Regional. CBU reached the regional final for the first time in school history, ending the year with a 26-7 overall record and top-25 ranking. GeJaun Wheelwright returns to the Lancers' starting lineup and was named the PacWest Preseason Player of the Year. He is the top returning scorer in the conference. Wheelwright and his four fellow seniors (Michael Robinson, Jordan Giusti, Trevone Williams, and Taj Spencer) — along with three other returners — will look to show six newcomers the ropes as the Lancers tip off the new season at the CCA Tipoff Classic.
