Box Score || Exhibition MatchesThe Upper Iowa women's tennis team hosted their only home event of the year on Saturday in Fayette at the UIU Tennis Complex. The Peacocks edged out the Knights of Wartburg College, 5-4, in a match up of former Iowa Conference foes. A very supportive crowd turned out for the dual and five exhibition matches under nearly perfect weather conditions. Wartburg notched a pair of wins in the doubles matches, but the home team was able to claim four of the six singles matches to pull off the victory.
Wartburg's Kayla Kuethe and Melissa Davis won the #1 doubles match, 8-5, over
Iris Verweij and
Yamit Vodavoz. The visitors added a win at #2 doubles when Marissa Buresh and Liz Rucker defeated
Victoria Kulbokas and
Kelly Jachymowski by an 8-4 count. Upper Iowa dominated the #3 doubles match, 8-0, thanks to the efforts of
Anna Okolot and
Saki Kawabata.
In singles play, Verweij (#1 singles) earned the 6-1, 6-1 win, Kawabata (#3 singles) picked up the 6-2, 6-4 victory, Okolot (#4 singles) won her match in three sets 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 and Jachymowski (#6 singles) claimed the fourth singles victory 6-2, 6-2. Wartburg picked up wins at #2 and #5.
Upper Iowa showed the strength of their depth in the five exhibition matches posting four wins in five matches. In doubles play,
Morgan Winnie and
Julia Prokopyshyn claimed an 8-2 decision and
Laura Alvarez and
Breanna Heichert teamed up for an 8-3 victory. Prokopyshyn (6-3, 6-2), Winnie (6-3, 6-3) and Alvarez (6-2, 6-3) all earned wins in singles play, while Wartburg got their lone win in the exhibition matches when Carly Sis defeated Heichert in a three-setter filled with tie-breakers, 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 10-7.
The Peacocks will return to the court in Des Moines, Iowa at the Drake University Invitational on Friday-Sunday, Sept, 12-14.
