NSIC Weekly Release

This week in Peacock women's soccer… Upper Iowa (1-4) comes home this week for the first time since the opening game of the season on Sept. 5. The Peacocks start the weekend by hosting Minnesota Duluth (3-3, 3-0 NSIC) on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Bulldogs are currently riding a three-game win streak with three straight shutouts. They boast the reigning NSIC Defensive Player of the Week in senior defender Megan Helberg. The Bulldogs own the all-time series against the Peacocks at 5-1, including a 2-0 victory in 2013. UIU wraps up the weekend with a match against St. Cloud State (3-3, 2-1 NSIC), who is on a two-game win streak and is currently tied for fourth in the conference standings. The Peacocks hold an all-time record against the Huskies of 2-1-4, with UIU beating SCSU 5-1 last season.

Tough Competition... All four Peacock losses this season have come against nationally ranked opponents, with Augustana checking in at No. 24 and Central Oklahoma, Rockhurst and Winona all currently receiving votes. Augustana is also third in the Central Region, while Central Oklahoma checks in at fourth and Winona is seventh. Rockhurst is fourth in the Midwest Region.

According to Head Coach Brian Diaz... "It's been a bit of a gauntlet so far this year, but we've played really good soccer and feel like playing against tougher opponents will pay dividends in the long run. We believe we can play with anyone in the country, being competitive with multiple top 25 teams."

Picking Up The Pace... After a slow start, the Peacocks offense has come alive. Since conference play began, UIU ranks third with 19.33 shots per game and second in corner kicks per game with 10. Despite not finding the back of the net until the fifth game of the year, the Peacocks are tied for sixth in conference play with three goals scored.

According to Diaz... "Sunday was a big for us, getting three balls in the net. I hope this will give us some momentum to continue. We've played so well and just needed for it to click, and I hope Sunday was that day for us."

Wronski Sisters Score... Aimee Wronski and Corinne Wronski were a responsible for two of the three goals scored in UIU's 3-0 win over Wayne State. Aimee scored the game's second goal, while Corinne had the assist on the final score. The sisters combined for 45 points last year on 17 goals and 11 assists, meaning one or both were involved in 58 percent of Peacock goals last season.

Last week for the Bulldogs Minnesota Duluth swept last weekend on the road at MSU Moorhead and Northern State. The Bulldogs beat the Dragons 4-0 in the rain thanks to a pair of goals in each half. UMD then traveled to Northern State and beat the Wolves, 1-0, scoring the lone goal just seven minutes into the game.

Last week for the Huskies St. Cloud State notched a couple wins over the last week, first taking down Northern State and following that with a win over MSU Moorhead. The Huskies needed a late goal against the Wolves from senior Kara Espinosa to break the 1-1 tie and win, 2-1.  Espinosa was again the hero against the Dragons, scoring in the second half to seal the 1-0 victory over MSU Moorhead.
