Peacocks Play Well, But Fall To Warriors

Upper Iowa takes over the game in the second half, but couldn't find the back of the net

Recap

The Peacocks dropped their first conference game of the year, 2-0, at No. 13 Winona State.

The Warriors got on the board in the second minute when Mehan Bolton, week one NSIC Offensive Player of the Week, scored on a through ball from Meg Riebau. It was Bolton's third goal in as many games to start the season.

Twenty minutes later, the Warriors found the back of the net again. This time, Darian Molter scored on assists from Nicole Sames and Shauna Rodman.

While the Warriors were able to capitalize on their opportunities in the first half, the Peacocks were the more aggressive side in the second half. Upper Iowa outshot the Warriors eight to six in the second half, earning ten corner kicks while the Warriors had none. Unfortunately, the Peacocks just could not find the back of the net.

Head Coach Brian Diaz praised the play of Mackenzie Taldone and Madie Edwards in the midfield, as well as Rachel Fowler and the rest of the back line for their play defensively.

Edwards led the Peacocks with five shots, but no Peacock managed more than one shot on goal. Kaitlyn Emanuel made three saves in net.

Despite the 0-2 start, Diaz is happy with the progress the team has made, moving from the preseason games until this point in the season. Having started the year against two ranked opponents, Diaz hopes that playing a tough early schedule will prepare the Peacocks to compete at a champion level.

According to Diaz…

"We needed to finish better to win the game, but we did everything really well up until the point of getting the ball in the back of the net. We defended really well, our midfielders played a really good game, our forwards worked tremendously hard and were very industrious trying to create opportunities."

"In the second half we had a ton of corner kicks, they had a save off the line and we had a couple misses. We took over the game. We were unfortunate to come out of there without the results we were looking for."

"I'm disappointed for the players. They played well enough to win the game and I hate it for them that they didn't get the result that they probably deserve."

Up Next…

The Peacocks will travel to Edmond, Oklahoma, to take on the Bronchos of Central Oklahoma University on Sunday, Sept. 14 at Noon.
