Recap

Upper Iowa 6 – Augustana 3

The Upper Iowa women's tennis team wrapped up non-conference play on Sunday as the team defeated Augustana College of Illinois, but it wasn't pretty. The Vikings sustained injuries during the match, which forced them to forfeit two points to the Peacocks. Nonetheless, Upper Iowa sealed the 6-3 victory thanks to perfect outings from Iris Verweij, Saki Kawabata, Kelly Jachymowski and Victoria Kulbokas. The win is even more impressive when you consider the Vikings were most recently ranked 17th in the latest NCAA Division III Central Region poll. The Peacocks will now look forward to finishing the regular season next weekend as they take on a pair of NSIC foes.

Upper Iowa was the designated home team as the squads competed at the Black Hawk Tennis Center in nearby Waterloo and the Peacocks seemed to feel right at home early on. Kawabata and Jachymowski paired up at #2 doubles to earn an 8-5 victory to get the ball rolling. As has been the case for the past five weeks, UIU had to forfeit the third doubles match, but did take a 2-1 lead into singles play. That's because midway through the #1 doubles match, the Vikings' suffered an injury and were forced to default the point. Dana Goggin was forced to retire for the day because of that injury which allowed Verweij and Kulbokas to pick up the doubles win over the Goggin sisters and improve to 8-5 this season.

The early momentum carried into singles action despite UIU dropping the #5 matchup. Verweij and Kawabata took care of business at #1 and #2, respectively, as each earned a pair of wins. Verweij picked up a 6-0 victory in the first set before finishing off her opponent 7-5 in the second. Kawabata followed suit as she scored two wins, 6-3 and 6-2. The Vikings were forced to default at #3 due to that prior injury and Kulbokas picked up the win. Rounding out the win for the home team was Jachymowski, who earned a 6-4 victory in the first set and a 6-1 victory in the second. With that win, Jachymowski moved closed to .500 on the year in singles action (9-10).
