Peacocks Scratch Out 5-4 Victory Over Ashford

Upper Iowa - 5, Ashford - 4

and Victoria Kulbokas posted an impressive 8-2 victory over their opponents and started the day off with a win. With Verweij and Kulbokas playing at #1, that meant Saki Kawabata and Kelly Jachymowski were back at #2. That didn't mean they disappointed. Rather, the duo posted an equally impressive 8-4 victory to improve to 6-4 overall in doubles play. Despite defaulting on the final doubles match, the Peacocks took a 2-1 lead into singles play.

The Saints, who are coached by former Peacock Head Coach Chad Fenwick, bounced back in singles action. Sami Melcher defeated Laura Alvarez at #5 singles to put the teams even at two points apiece. Verweij stole the momentum back with a pair of victories at #1, 6-1 and 6-3, before Kawabata followed suit at #2. For the Osaka, Japan native, her victories took a bit longer after going to a tie-breaker for the first set. Eventually, Kawabata pulled out a 7-6 victory in the first set, thanks to an 8-6 tie-breaker, and a 6-3 win in the second set.

Ashford earned two more victories, including a default point at #6, but it wasn't enough. The Peacocks sealed the win thanks to a pair of wins at #4 from Kulbokas, 6-3 and 6-2. That sealed the 5-4 non-conference finish for Upper Iowa as the team improved to 12-9 overall this season.

The Peacocks will head back to Waterloo early tomorrow morning for an 8:30 a.m. match against Augustana College (Illinois). That match will also be played in the Black Hawk Tennis Center.
