Recap

Upper Iowa 1 – Winona State 5

Defeating a team twice within a two week span isn't easy – the Upper Iowa women's tennis team found that out first hand on Saturday in the opening round of the NSIC Women's Tennis Tournament. The Peacocks dropped two of three doubles matches and three straight decisions in singles action as the Warriors of Winona State clinched the 5-1 victory. WSU, which was on the wrong end of two 9-8 outcomes in doubles and two more third-set matches in singles play two weeks ago against UIU, avenged their earlier loss and ended the Peacocks season. Despite the season coming to a close, the Peacocks finished above .500 (15-10) for the first time in three years and earned the second-best finish in the NSIC since UIU joined the conference (8-3).

The Warriors will advance to the semifinals and face top-seeded Augustana tomorrow morning.

Winona State wasted little time on Saturday as the Warriors stole the momentum with an 8-3 doubles win at #1. Hannah Potter and Jessica Urban of WSU paired up to defeat Victoria Kulbokas and Iris Verweij, who finished the year 9-6 as a duo. The Peacocks bounced right back with a win at #2 doubles thanks to an 8-2 advantage by Saki Kawabata and Kelly Jachymowski. Including that win, Kawabata and Jachymowski finish the year 10-4 together.

The Warriors posted the #3 doubles victory, 8-0, to take a 2-1 lead into singles action, but the wave of momentum continued to favor the team in purple. WSU posted a pair of 6-0 wins at #6 singles before clinching the victory with two more wins in singles action. Despite leads by Kawabata and Verweij in their singles matches, the Peacocks were not allowed to finish the remaining games after WSU hit the five-point threshold.

As the Warriors head deeper into the postseason, the Peacocks will now face the offseason with a young and maturing roster.
