Recap

Upper Iowa 6 –Southwest Minnesota State 3

With a trip to the postseason already wrapped up, Sunday's match for the Upper Iowa women's tennis team presented an opportunity to get in a little extra practice. The Peacocks, who already clinched the fourth seed in the NSIC Women's Tennis Championships taking place on April 26-27, outpaced the Mustangs to the finish line earning a 6-3 victory in Winona, Minnesota.

Unlike yesterday's extra-set, tightly-contested matches, the Peacocks jumped out to a pair of early victories at #1 and #2 doubles in dominant fashion. Saki Kawabata and Kelly Jachymowski finished first as the duo earned an 8-1 victory at #2. Iris Verweij and Victoria Kulbokas weren't far behind as they improved to 5-0 in NSIC play with an 8-4 win at #1 doubles. UIU defaulted the final point, but took a 2-1 lead into singles action.

The Mustangs responded with a pair of 6-1 victories at #5 singles, but UIU was too strong. The Peacocks recorded the final four points of the match and took home the 6-3 victory as four players finished with perfect 2-0 records.

Verweij was the first to finish off her opponent as she posted two flawless 6-0 victories at #1 singles. Kawabata followed suit at #2 with a 6-0 victory in the first set and a 6-3 win in the second. After dropping yesterday's singles match to Winona State, Kulbokas bounced back on Sunday with a pair of 6-3 victories at #3. The win pushes her back to 8-2 in NSIC action this year. Meanwhile, Jachymowski expanded on her two-match win streak in singles play with two wins at #4, 6-1 and 6-3. The freshman's win pushed her win total back above .500 this spring (10-9).

The win gives UIU a 15-9 overall record this season as the Peacocks move into the postseason. Upper Iowa's 8-3 conference record gives the team a fourth-seed finish in the tournament, which means there will be a first-round rematch with Winona State.
