RecapUpper Iowa 5 – Winona State 4With a fourth seed in the playoffs on the line, the Upper Iowa women's tennis team took care of business in Winona, Minnesota. The Warriors began the NSIC season 5-0 and looked to be one of the top teams in the conference behind NSIC-favorite Augustana. Yet recently, WSU has dropped three of its past four matches, most recently falling to St. Cloud State, 5-4. That's the exact time UIU hit the gas pedal.
Despite playing with just five players over the past month due to injuries, the Peacocks entered the weekend having won five of their last six and with a full sail of momentum. That helped UIU overcome two close battles in doubles play early in the day and two more three-set matches in singles action en route to a 5-4 victory. The win ensures UIU a fourth-seed in the NSIC Women's Tennis Championships that take place on April 26-27 in Minnetonka, Minn. The Peacocks will most likely face the Warriors again, in the opening round of the tournament as WSU falls to fifth place in the NSIC.
Upper Iowa's #1 singles duo of
Iris Verweij and
Victoria Kulbokas continued their quest to perfection in NSIC action as they earned a 9-8 victory over Hannah Potter and Jessica Urban of WSU. Verweij and Kulbokas are now 4-0 together in NSIC play. Just as impressive, was the match at #2 doubles.
Saki Kawabata and
Kelly Jachymowski were neck-and-neck with the Warriors' Aimee Basinski and Brianna Havelka, but in the end, UIU pulled out the win, 9-8, to take a 2-1 lead into singles action.
Picking up where they left off in doubles action, Verweij and Kawabata both disposed of their opponents at #1 and #2 singles, respectively. Verweij earned a quick first-set victory, 6-4, before Potter could answer with a win of her own. After dropping the second set, 7-6, Verweij wasted no time getting to ten first. She finished off her opponent, 10-1, and gave UIU another point. Kawabata didn't need an extra set. She posted back-to-back wins over Urban, 6-3 and 7-5 to improve to 8-1 in the NSIC this year.
Despite dropping a point each at 3, 5 and 6, UIU and WSU were tied with one match to go.
Kelly Jachymowski earned an early 6-3 victory in the first set, but Havelka bounced right back with a 6-2 win of her own in the second set. Jachymowski went back to what worked in the opening set and outpaced Havelka to the finish line as she capped the 10-6 win in the final set. The victory pushed UIU over the top as the Peacocks wrapped up the 5-4 victory and improved to 7-3 in NSIC play this season.
